Columbian Newspapers for Chicas
I like to give small gifts (regalo) to the chicas - it's fun and rewarding!
When I was talking to one of the Columbianas at Seamans recently, she mentioned that the girls often feel cut off from home. They have their cellphones to get word from Columbia, but it is expensive. They have no TV of any kind, let alone Spanish language, let alone Columbian TV! All info in St Martin is in English, French, or Dutch, but seldom in Spanish.
So the next time I went to see her I look a printout of part of the El Tiempo newspaper from their web site: http://eltiempo.terra.com.co/
El Tiempo is from Bogota, but has sub-sections on Cali, Medelin, etc., as well as Sports (desportes), fashion, culture, music, etc. This gift was a big hit - today's scandals and news from home, delivered direct to the brothel!
The only problem is that the web layout shows mostly only the headlines - you have to click down to get the detailed article. So now I pick a couple of articles that sound interesting and print out the details too, as well as the national headlines, and the headlines from a few sub-sections.
I printed El Tiempo again this week, with a complete article on the Columbian singer Juanes, and gave my gift to a girl from Cali at Petite Chateau. She immediately read the entire thing, cover to cover! She tried to give it back and when I told her it was a gift for her and her amigas, I thought she was going to cry.
What happened to all the chicas at 2:30pm?
How important to the chicas do you think our dollars are?
I was at Carolina in the afternoon and noticed that they have added a spanish language channel to their TV (univision from the usa I think). My favorite show title on this channel is "Gorda y Flaca" (fat and skinny). At the bar I watched a bit of Spanish TV (from Mexico I think) and read the subtitles to work on my Spanish.
While I was walking back to the bar from a session at 230pm, I noticed 6 or 7 very cute chicas sitting on the sofa inside the "hotel" lobby (which is beyond the bar), eyes glued to a Spanish language Soap Opera on the TV there.
Back in the bar there were 8 or 10 men, sitting and drinking, waiting for chicas! Shows us what the priorities of the chicas are, at least with the novelty of a new Spanish TV channel.
If you come into Carolina in the afternoon and find the bar empty of chicas, first check the restaurant next door (where they eat lunch and where you can see them in bright light!) and then just slide through the door to the "hotel" (under the sign that says "Gentleman's VIP Club") and join them on the sofa.
