Depending on if a friend is in Cartagena when I get there Friday, I might go straight to Santa Marta. I like that place. Maybe try some of the park girls. Bet they are a bit cheaper.
Still looking for motorcycle rental options in Santa Marta. Ideas?
David B
Sorry bro, I don't remember seeing any places to rent motorcycles.
No doubt the park girls are much cheaper, wish I knew about them and the location when I was there! Bring back some pics!

Lets GO
Hey Senior Ford,
Wanna put this place on our 07 schedule?
Fantasy,
I've got two non-pros I've got to get over and see. Let me know if and when you're thinking about going. I found a great little beach-hut style places called Felipe's to stay at. Its on the beach and cheap but looks nice. Maybe even KB might wanna go, if his novia will let him. HA!

Hi,
I wanted to visit next month. Can anyone recommend a good chica friendly hotel with A/C. Also, are there any upscale malls for meeting non pro's in the day time.
thanks.

Get an apartment in Rodadero. 50k-80k pesos.
Upscale malls? no
You want to focus your time in Rodadero, Taganga, and Tayrona anyways. Santa Marta is not where you want to be. If you aren't a beach lover, choose another destination. Santa Marta isn't like Medellin and Cali where you go looking around at malls etc for non-pros.

There is definitely a shopping mall in Santa Marta (not El Rodadero, which many people think of as Santa Marta). I'm not sure what W71 is thinking is "upscale", but I'm pretty sure I remember a Studio F there, which is up market in Colombia. I was there with a GF, so I did not flirt with the women.
I stayed at the Hotel Yuldama (El Rodadero), which I expect is girlfriendly at 105,000 per night. For two. I was not really happy with it as it was not on the water and the rooms were small. I went to some of the apartments closer to the water - unfortunately I'm not finding my notes on the details here just this moment - but being on the water is, of course, nicer. I think the prices were in the 300,000 range. This was December last year, prices may be lower in August.

There is a beuna vista mall in Santa Marta. I think it is the type of mall you are looking. There were not many people around during the days I was there. It seemed fairly upscale, had movie threatres, food court, etc.

300k to stay on the water? Not even Decameron is that expensive (less than 200k) Nothing wrong with Buena Vista Mall in Santa Marta.. and sure there is a Studio F there, but that doesn't make the mall da bomb. When he asked for a classy mall, I assumed he meant a place to go do chica watching/meeting, I didn't think he was referring to the stores. I.e. Is there a store to buy nice clothes?
So yes, there are the normal stores that you will find in any mall. It's just this mall is not like the malls in Medellin, Cali, Bogota, or Barranquilla. I.e. There's not a hustle and bustle. What this mall does have is an outdoor parking lot, from the looks of it.. you will think the mall is closed. Catch my drift?

Greg,
The guy asked about Santa Marta, not Riohacha. Thus I answered his question about the Santa Marta area. Tayrona is considered the Santa Marta area as it's very close. Riohacha is not. I actually prefer the beaches in Tayrona over Riohacha anyways. Plus, I would not recommend Riohacha to anyone as I don't want people to get the wrong impression and think it's a walk in the park. Could more experienced Colombian travelers such as Ricker annd certainly others get by? Sure. Could the typical gringo that stays at the Mansion and speaks only average Spanish get by? Hmmmm... Let's clarify something. Riohacha is in La Guajira. Riohacha is also very very close to Maicao and the Venezuelan border. In fact this is where you get off the bus to cross the border. This area is notorious for FARC/Paracho gunfights and chances of being in crossfire, getting robbed, kidnapped, taken advantage of etc by your average extranjero traveler are VERY high versus other areas of Colombia. To even mention someone to go there on this board is foolish. If someone asks questions about it... sure I'll answer them. But don't go recommending people go to La Guajira or tout that the beaches are better than Tayrona because that is not true. El Cabo in Tayrona is much nicer than the beaches in La Guajira. I guess it is personal opinion, but that's my take. By the way... the Tayrona entrance is 45 minutes from Santa Marta or can be gotten to by Launcha(boat) in 60-90 minutes from Taganga. Riohacha is a good 4 to 5 hours from Santa Marta... with the last 90 minutes of the ride going through a territory MOST gringos do not belong.. .nor do they belong in Riohacha. That's my advice. Flame it if you want. Just because nothing happened to you does not mean it is safe.
But why should I bring up Riohacha when someone asks about Santa Marta? That is like saying what's wrong with Monteria when someone asks a question about Cartagena. They aren't even in the same state(department).

Yeah. I know 300k seems high, but that's what I'm remembering. This was one of the buildings on the south side of El Rodadero, with direct access to the beach. It was during high season. I'm also a very obvious gringo; maybe they thought I was loaded. Like I say, I don't have my notes, so I can't be sure. It may have been lower than 300k, but I know it was a high number.
I think AG is just playing a game with you.

Yep.. you got taken behind the wood-shed. Another member here just told me about the prices at Decameron/All-inclusive. I believe it was about 160k-200k pesos for both of them. In fact, I even recommended to him that he stay in an apartment 50 yards from the beach for 50-70k pesos as that is where all the excitement is at anyways. There are some touts on the beach trying to get vacationers to go look at their properties and some look real nice, but I still think 300k is over that. I've stayed at La Sierra. It was 120k for a regular room and 170-180k for a Suite for 2 people. So, I don't know bud. Somebody got a nice fat commission. jaajjaja. In all honesty, apartments are the way to go in Rodadero.
As far as Santa Marta, it's just flat out boring. I regularly take the bus for 1k pesos or a taxi for 6k pesos to spend the day or evening in Santa Marta. Waste of time. Rodadero is where it's at.

Well, in fairness, I did not get taken. At least not that day :)
I just sounded out the rates, thought they were too high, and spent a few more days in the Hotel Yuldama.

Santa Marta airport
For those who didn't see this news article, on the same day as the airline crash in Sao Paulo, Brazil, there was a very similar crash at the Santa Marta airport. Picture is attached. The Aero Republica airliner skidded off the wet runway into the ocean. This caught my eye since I flew on Aero Republica with my novia in June 07. The new article said they are considering closing and moving the airport, which sits on some prime oceanfront property which could then be developed.
From the photo galley thread.
Some of the others girls didn't want there photo taken. but the selection was good.
Yes I wasnt impressed with the girls from the other clubs, so I stuck to flamingos, altho I am told there is one other club called Bananas, and there is a park across the street that has plenty of working girls, I didnt learn about this place until I returned home. but I am told bananas has about 30 girls, but I cannot confirm that.
the names of all 5 clubs are
Pleyboy
Flamingos
Babilonia
Hollywood
Bananas
Sorry no addresses avialable, just ask the Taxi drivers
TLN varied from girl to girl. the lowest I paid was 160k copa + 50k house exit fee, average price was around 200k for TLN
I mainly stayed in the Rodadero area. and some nights stayed out partying/dancing till 4am, and never had a single problem. Plenty of people and police were around during all hours of the day and night, and people were very freindly and helpful, but I also had a chica on my arm most the time.
Couple more pics of some pros, and some non pro's faces blocked out, when I get time, I will make some screen shots from a few videos I collected :)
Again, I didnt keep any of the pro's contact information.
Based on this, you can go without a chica and there will plenty available to choose from.
