read about the amistad, but a friend recommended doncarlos. Any insight?
Stay any of the other two places. AVOID BEST WESTERN
I would be grateful for suggestions to a traveller who wants to avoid the "pick up" scene and is not price sensitive. My last vacation to CR included an overnight at the CrownPlaza, followed by a few days at Los Suenos Marriott (Jaco) and then a Marriott near the airport in SJ, and no Chicas. Are there reliable escort services in which you can arrange for someone to visit an upscale hotel rather than going to a bar? I read warnings here that arrangements in advance for extended or overnight visits are risky. I am visiting the weekend of Oct 8th and will post a report even if I strike out. All advice welcome.
GaimtMan,
I have corresponded with you before when I visited Panama City. We were to meet and you were going to show me the city in and around PTY...but my schedule did not allow the time....anyway.....I am an old hand around San Jose....and can tell you about a couple of places that you can stay and will enjoy yourself.....
First off I would recommend the Hotel Castillo...it runs about $ 45-50.00 and is very nice, very chica friendly, convienent, all that.....also the La Amastad is also very good...about the same price level...maybe just a little more ritzy than the older Castillo, next my choice would be Sportsmans Lodge...but you will perhaps need reservations to get in there as it is very busy.
Hope you have a great trip to San Jose.......

Can anyone recommend a chica friendly resort with a decent swimming pool?
Try the Hotel La Amistad. New rooms and great meals. Penthouse can be had for app $110.00 a night and the ajoining bedroom for $50.00 more. Check out there web site; hotelamistad.com, Hotel #506-2258-0021, Fax 506-2258-4900
Make sure you get the rooms in the back of the Hotel as it abuts the Heridia train tracks. walking distance to Cafe Mundo, Sportsmans, Chubbs, Del Ray, Bar New York, New Fantasy, HLH, Morazon Park & Hotel...etc.
Can you please clarify your comment about getting a room at the back of the hotel? I'm assuming what you mean is the front of the hotel abuts the train tracks, so the rooms at the back are preferred? How bad is the train noise? Thanks for all the info.

No. In the past, they have sometimes not allowed two or more guests at once.
Going to SJO in early November. Usually go to the HLH, but some buddies are going to be in the Amistad.
What are the pros and cons of that place?

No charge to bring a guest. Also, Iguana asked about the pros and cons.
I have stayed there only once, and liked it, but the prices have gone up and I think there are better values. Howver...
Pros- Comfortable rooms, Location near the Sportsmans while not being in the mix (can be pro or con), less ovbiously a monger hotel, good service, barrio amon.
Cons-Price point is not a bit high, some noise from train, but not really that bad, no chicas on site (good and bad).
The penthouse is very nice. A good overall vibe.

I can confirm all recommendations about Amistad, stayed there just this past weekend.
About the train, it doesnt runs on weekends. The Barman Cesar is extremely helpful
I am in the early planning stages for a January or February trip. I thought I might get a decent hotel for around $50 to 70, but when I look at the few where I can get quotes online, it seems like they are much higher.
I guess it's not surprising, but are rates that much higher during the winter? I looked at Dunn's Inn and Sportsmens. La Amistad did not have availability for the dates I plugged in.
Gray line shuttle is telling me it will cost me $15 to take me from the san jose airport to HLH and anotrher $15 back to the air port. Is this reasonable or is a taxi always the best optioin? Will be going there towards the end of the moths for the first time. Thanks for any information!

$ 15.00 for the Greyline shuttle is a very good deal. Most taxi's charge around $ 23-25.00 for this trip....only way you could save any money for this trip would be to find another passenger (probably another guy ) and split the fare with him from airport to town......or if you are that concerned with saving your money....walk down the hill....about 200 yards from front of airport and catch the local public bus to town for about 50 cents USD.
Ask the driver or other passengers when you board the bus...if it is going to " San Jose"...and then ask again when you hit the main part of town - where you should get off the bus. Tell them you want to be close to Morizan Park...which is about a 4 block walk from HLH.
