Tutor in Portuguese
Can anyone recommend a reasonably good Portuguese tutor in Rio who would come to my office (mid-Copacabana) for perhaps an hour a few times a week?
I have spoken to 1 tutor but she is very booked up. So I need other options.
Put an ad in the newspaper, at the University, or in BrazilCupid. You'll have hundreds of proposals.
If you need an educated girl, go ask to the female receptionists of the better hotels. They are bilingual, have graduated from a tourist school and could orient you well.
Regards.

Vale Tudo
I find it really strange that for a city that produces some of the best MMA fighters in the world, they have no MMA fights/shows in Rio! I have asked around at some of the BJJ schools and the juice stands that endorse the fighters and they say they dont have MMA fights in Brasil. Really odd.
Go to Shopping Santa Clara 33 (Rua Santa Clara 33), loja 1107/1108.
There is a shop selling fight gear, Rip Dorey. The sweet attendant, Renata, can provide you with info on where to see Vale Tudo fights.

Tam
I'm going to Rio soon on a non stop to Rio on Tam.
For the past 13 years I have been checking my luggage in a large hard side samsonite case on Continental airlines and have never had a problem.
The samsonite lock broke recently so I went out and bought a Tumi set, carry on case 20" , suitor and check in case.
I decided to go completely carry on this trip since I have the carry on case and suitor; I followed the rules of the tsa on liquids and did everything by the book.
I called TAM today just to get some info and before I hung up she wanted to inform me about the carry on rules, so I listened to what she had to say thinking there would be no problem, this is what she told me:
You can carry on 1 carry on item that is 11.5 lbs and 1 personal item that could be a laptop and you can check in luggage up to 70 lbs.
I told her my carry on bag is 20'' in diameter and 33 lbs, she told me then I would have to check this as my carry on can't be more than 11.5 lbs. WTF?
I'm sure some of you guys flew TAM before, ever experience this?
-
I don't think you can officially carry on any bag weighing anything close t0 33lbs. Most arilines in my experience have official allowances not much more than 11lbs. Of course when you actually check in you can usually get away with 20lbs easy enough, 33lbs is probably stretching things.

They're not going to weigh your carry on at the gate, that's just what the res agent is told to say.
Just walk on as usual with a big smile.

I've flown TAM a few times - not my fave airline but although the trip can vary quite a bit usually serviceable. Like many airlines, their strictness at check in may be influenced by how full the plane is and whether she had a decent breakfast before checking your bag.
But 70lbs is way out of order. PM me your packing list if you like (I generally travel cabin only and extended multistop). Given that I'm sometimes a bit over the official limit by a pound or two though, here's a few tricks fwiw. However heavy my carry on is, I make an effort to lift it casually with one hand, as if it weighs hardly anything; anything particularly heavy goes in a jacket pocket; I always flirt with the check in clerk and try to make her feel good (and the bag an afterthought); I pick up a duty-free bag at the earliest opportunity - putting stuff in there is not technically allowed but often they won't check; I tell myself I don't care (so I won't stress), but will remonstrate heavily if challenged (it once got me at least a free upgrade - "I've been round the world on this trip cabin baggage only and are you going to ruin my wonderful memories of your airline and great country by being the only one to refuse??") Finally I always have enough ready cash in case they say, "It would be a surcharge" - this rarely works in Europe, though they might relent and let it through (In India on Air India, I'd just pay a bribe to "fix" any problem, but don't recommend this on TAM!).
Good luck. Do think twice about carrying so much - there's ways round most of the stuff you think you need.

I flew with TAM several times. Sometimes only with a carry on luggage.
33 lbs is about 15 kg. It shouldn't be a problem. I usually put my bag over the shoulder pretending it's very light when I walk up to the counter. Chit-chat with the attendant to distract her from giving attention to your luggage.

Since TAM joined Star Alliance, I just show them my Continental Million Miler card and Star Alliance Gold gold and I get seated in front. Great they're doing it, al least until the honeymoon wears off.
Air India. jaja Money Power. flew with them to Dhaka last week. Then, on Biman where -- surprise -- their jet was an old Varig craft. Still had all the signage in Portuguese, everything, even the food service cart with Varig on it. Might have ridden the same one from JFK to GRU twenty years. It looked THAT old.

How about this?
Getting laid in Rio is a no-brainer. But what kind of a plug will I need for my notebook?

I fly with TAM all the time and they are alert on the size of carry on luggage.
Actually you can have 2. One with certain size (can't remember now) and 5 kilos and one laptop. These can be separate.
Why is it so difficult to check in the luggage? I know that eg. Galeao airport in Rio is slowest in the world, what comes to getting the luggage but its not possible to take all in carry on. Be considerate. Imagine if you all should travel with your carry on on your feer under the seat in front of you? Space is sparce in airplanes and if someone takes oversized carry on it means that someone else needs to travel without leg space. On long haul that would be really unconfortable.
My opinion is that anyone who wants to take oversized carry on should pay extra seat for to be able to do so.

If you mean power, its more complicated. In Rio there are at least 3 different kind of power outlets.
1st is US style flat pin outlet.
2nd is almost similar as in North Europe, 2 round pins, although very thin.
3rd is new brazilian standard. 3 round pins.
None of these are really compatible with any international standards. I doubt that there is an adapter for the new 3 pin power outlet for sale outside of Brazil.
Now, when you finally check in the hotel or see your apartment check which type of power plug you need. Then go to supermarket and buy an adapter. They're cheap, 1 - 2 reais. They are called: Benjamin. Don't ask me why.

Yep, if the size of the carry-on is xtra large, it may draw attention and they may not allow it.
They will not, however, be alerted as to the weight or over-weight of the bag if the bag is of relatively normal size.
Casually walk on, casually stow it in the over-head bin, everyone contente :)

Yes thank you all for your comments.
The bag is regulation carry on 20" but it weighs 33 lbs, she made a point to tell me they only allow 11.5 lbs.
I really wanted to go carry on this time because I was worried that Tam may lose my bag but it's non stop jfk - gig so I don't think there is much to worry about.
Either way I'll be ok.
