While I'm hardly an expert, I have made numerous trips to Mexico- Guadalajara, Mex City, Morelia, Leon, San Miguel etc. and I've never had a problem with crime. Except for Mexico City, I feel much safer in Mexico than in my own neighborhood. And I have walked the streets during the wee hours in some poorer barrios. Maybe I'm lucky, but attitude is more important. If you go anywhere with an attitude and look for trouble, you are going to find it. Treat the girls right and they will be your protectors and look after you. I speak just enough spanish to get in trouble and the ladies often will come to my rescue in any misunderstanding. Trying to be cool or macho in a foreign environment is looking for trouble. Whether in the US or a foreign country, I always act a little naive and stupid but sweet with the girls. If you try to outsmart them and show how educated you are, you usually trigger a negative vibe. Act a little sweet and helpless and it triggers a "mothering instinct" in most women. They think, "This poor guy , I can't take advantage of him. He can barely take care of himself" and they end up looking after you. It works for me. - P
