Economic value of the Chinese Sex Industry
The US Embassy itself has taken an interest in the Chinese sex industry as this link attests: http://www.usembassy-china.org.cn/sandt/sex-industry.html
According to the (slightly outdated) data published on the US Embassy website, in China "the contribution of the 'sex industry' to the GDP comes in at about 12.1 - 12.8 percent."
A more recent and in-depth study of the Chinese sex business can be found at http://www.xingfu.se/kina/Prostitution%20in%20China.pdf This is a Masters Thesis presented to the Department of Chinese of the Center of for Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities at Lund University, Sweden.
According to this study, "the entire country may have ten million or more prostitutes at any given time, in a conservative estimate. If every prostitute brings in two hundred yuan each day on average—a conservative assumption—, the daily turn-around is two billion yuan, or seven hundred billion yuan a year. This is of the same scale as the total Shanghai GDP in 2004, or five percent of entire China’s GDP the same year, still in a conservative hypothesis."
(This is a very detailled study. Maps on pages 26 and 27 for instance show every sex oriented establishment in the Shanghai Jiading district. I wish the study would have been conducted in Beijing.)
The US pushes China to change from an export oriented economy to a consumption oriented economy. A totally consumption oriented industry (sex) coming in at between 5% and 13% of GDP should have all the attention of the US Commercial Attaches. Which may be one of the many explanations why Maggie's, a proverbial showcase of that industry sector, is very welcome in the embassy district.
So many incall MPs, so little time
Zhuren,
Thank you. You named the asking prices that you were quoted. That was what I was hoping Worm would provide. No offense, Worm. In all other respects, your report was very welcome and helpful and got me thinking about exploring these venues again.
A couple of years ago, I had some great experiences from the MPs listed in the Japanese magazines with their awesome insert maps. FS was around Y600. After a lot of searching, I found some real model quality. However, those places were no longer operating when I looked again a year later.
Then the problem became how to choose among the dozens of incall MPs listed, especially since there is so little to go on to make a decision. I really didn't have the time to go look at the selection at each one. That's why the detailed report by Worm earlier on Soho MPs was great. But to really benefit me, I would need to know how to find the two incall places he mentioned among the dozens listed in the mags.
Some of the incalls are owned and run by the same operation, so they share their girls. I found this to be the case a couple of years ago. I became friends with one of the mamasans and found out that she ran three different apartment incalls. One was near the 21st century hotel and had a traditional Asian costume theme that was kinda kinky (they dressed in qipaos and cheap kimonos). If a customer wanted to see more girls, she would arrange for girls at one of her other incalls to taxi over. It would be helpful to have current information about which incalls are run by the same people.
If you think that the incall MPs are all the same quality, then you wouldn't be interested in the details. I, however, think the quality and service of the various girls in the various places can differ drastically. Hence, I am interested in seeking out the one or two incalls that are the best among the dozens listed.
Maybe we can pool our resources and divide the numbers among us. Then we can report back to each other on the quality and prices at each location. Actually, I was thinking about doing this with regard to some saunas in Chaoyang, too. PM me if interested.
Soho "New Town" (the oldest SOHO with the colored buildings) sports a number of apartment style massage places.
These establishments are usually advertised in magazines targeted at Japanese expats. A good one is "Concierge" magazine (the pocket version.) It will be in Japanese, advertising Chinese places, but there is some English.
The establishments purport to be in the "A" tower of Soho New Town, but actually they are across the street in the "Orange" and "Red" building. Call the number in the magazines, or simply go to Soho New Town (Jian Guo Lu, which is an extension of Chang an Ave, between 3rd and 4th Ring Road, corner of Dawanglu) and call any of the phone numbers prominently displayed in the windows of the "Orange" and "Red" buildings. Dawanglu subway station. The mamasan sometimes has a little English. They need to give you a room number. You give the number to the building guard, he smiles and buzzes you in.
It's FS with the usual bath & lick & fire & ice treatment. Asking price is 800. 1000 RMB for the full course, the actual price is left to your negotiation skills.
The girls are quite enthusiastic. Given that they are geared towards Japanese clientele, Caucasian members may be a tight fit. The A tower across the street has some Japanese hostess bars hidden away.
