My $.02
Hello, to all fellow esteemed Mongers,
After reading the quality posts and many of the questions posted here, I felt the urge to add my two cents on Santa Marta.
I agree that it is a wonderful place to bring a chica and it seems that it would be no problem to convince a chica to accompany you there. SM is considered to be THE place in Colombia as far as being the best beach town and rightfully so! BTW, I found that chicas are very keen on travelling to Cartagena as well but more for the ritzy tourist feel rather than the quality of the beaches (which are NOT that good, IMO).
However, I disagree with others that SM is not a good place to monger. True, it doesn't come close to MDE. The quality/quantity is not as good as Cartagena or BQ either but the prices are better, especially if you monger in SM proper and not the Rodadero. There were two main strip joints in Rodadero last July when I was there: Los Angeles and Flamingos. Bananas was more economical but the selection was less. Los Angeles had MANY hot chicas but was more pricy. It seemed that the chicas there were free to set their own prices and some were more than I cared to pay. However, there were several 10's there that beat anything I found at the high-end strip joints in MDE. Of course there were many 6-9's and I was able to negotiate something to my liking.
Downtown SM had several strip clubs to choose from that were very economical. The one that is on the main strip across from the oceanwalk is called "Vedero el Amor" or something like that. There was a big selection but only a few 7-8's. The girls were very friendly and fun and the price was about $25 a pop. There are several more such as Bananas (which had a good selection and several hotties) but is very dark and LOUD! I don't remember all of the names of the others that I went to as I was a little drunk, but I just found a young taxi driver and told him to drive around. Babylonia was the name of one of them, I believe. All in all, one needs to visit them all and IMO there will be no problems finding something that you like, whatever your tastes.
As far as hotels go, I stayed at Hotel Mar Azul which is only a couple blocks off the beach in Rodadero and was very economical. I'm not sure if it was "chica friendly" or not but I never paid any extras for having girls over. Maybe it was because the place was packed and busy at the time and they didn't notice or maybe it was because I made friends with the hotel staff?
As for things to do in the vicinity, IMO if one does not visit Parque Tayrona while in the area the trip is wasted. It is considered a national treasure and for good reason! Absofuckinglutely breath-taking! There are many outfits in Rodadero which organize day tours of the park and it is not expensive. Also, there is a nice fishing village close by, I believe called Tagonga which is beautiful and popular with the backpacking crowd. Economical and with a very sleepy, natural feel.
In conclusion, if one would like to explore a beautiful and relatively cheap paradise on earth, then SM is on my top list. But, one does not have to do without the creature comforts (such as mongering) to do so. It is not a "one-stop-shop" like some places but if you like a sense of adventure and the thrill of hunting for poon, then it should fit the bill. Hope this was helpful.

Please Click Here for more information.[/blue]
Visited Santa Marta in June for several days, then returned in October for a more extended stay. Drove a rental car east to Tayrona and around. It was nice natureza. As for downtown SM, the historic section/center, and the Malecon. Construction on streets and sidewalks was being done in the center, so it was a little inconvenient to have a car. Will be nice when its finished, but even so, Santa Marta has a ways to go (if it ever gets there) before it looks like a fully restored 18th or 17th century colonial tourist town. Infrastructure not uncomfortable but hotel and restauants in front of the (crowded/small) beach not as good quality as Rodero. Saw the clubs described by the previous poster -- they can get a bit raucus. There's a spillover in front of these places on some nights that extends for a block radius. By the looks of them, chicas who were refused admission, on drugs or sick, or just too unpresentable. On the Malecon later in the evening there are SW's. Sit at a cafe with a beer and see them. OR, walk and see them sitting at the cafes. Some alright and some young. The older and not-so-good-looking ones are hovering in the side streets in the first block back from the beach. Some nights not many, other nights a parade. Don't go expecting top quality, but if you sit at a table outside long enough odds are fair that something decent enough will pass by.

Rodadero Aptos
I would just arrive in Rodadero and go straight to the beachfront area. You will find many touts with rental information for you, or you can go to the front desk of these apartment buildings and ask about availability. This might sound crazy not booking in advance, but this way you will have an opportunity to view an apartment before renting it, and you will be able to negotiate yourself a great deal.
Until what time are the touts out? Next month I will be arriving in Barranquilla at 1642 and taking a van or bus from the airport or wherever, so I will arrive in Santa Marta no earlier than 1930.

Getting from BAQ
Over the weekend I emailed Marsol to make reservations for a van ride from the airport in Barranquilla to Santa Marta. I never heard back. As a matter of fact every time I email a service hotel, van, etc. In South America they next to never return the email. Same happened with the hotel I am staying in.
Anyway. After not hearing anything yesterday I decided to give them a call. They have many numbers listed on the website. Ring Ring Ring. I could not get through. Then finally someone picked up the phone on one of the numbers. I told her that I needed a ride from the airport. She said that they don't pick up at the airport so I would need to come to Calle 64 with Cra 46 for the 7pm trip. I agreed. She told me that it would be 19K.
While waiting at the airport in Miami I went over my notes and saw that a company called Van Express leaves the airport bound for Santa Marta every two hours. I think the cost of this would have been 35K-40K.
When I arrived in Barranquilla I went upstairs to use the Banco Colombia ATM. The withdrawl limit was 400K, so I took that and went back downstairs in search of Van Express. There was nobody in the airport help desk and I didn't see any signs of anything related to transportation to Santa Marta. So I asked one of the cabbies who was standing around trying to find a fair. He said the only van services he knows of have to be made by appointment. I told him about the one I had and we came to a deal of 14K to take me to the designated Marsol office.
-Sidebar: When my plane touched down and I turned on my phone I had a text asking me how I was. I had no idea who it was because the number was unfamiliar. So I asked. The response was in French. Je suis la femme de tes reves (I am the woman of your dreams). Then Spanish. Yo te di los besos mas ricos en Colombia. Since I only know one person in Colombia who speaks French I knew it was an old flame in Barranquilla. She wanted me to stop by her house. I told the driver that I would like to make a quick stop at her house on the way to my destination (although it was wayyy out of the way.) Later on I recanted and just decided to hurry up and get to Santa Marta..
As we were walking to the car the driver said that I should just catch a van leaving from Simon Bolivar (Calle 19). From there it is a straight shot to Santa Marta. He said it would only cost 10K and was closer than where I had to go and would be better than going across town and having to back track. I agreed. In no time we were at Simon Bolivar. There was a van getting ready to leave. I paid the taxi guy 12K, gave the van assistant my suitcase, and hopped in with my backpack. I think 3 people came after me, which filled the van up. We all had to write our name on the same registration sheet. After that the helper collected the money.
10K was the price to a common stop in Santa Marta, however I had to pay 20K along with another Colombiano because we wanted door-to-door service. I set my stop watch. We arrived 1 hour and 37 minutes later in front of a Gazel gas station. Everybody started to exit except me and the 20K Colombiano. There were taxis parked at this spot and one sexy Colombiana who rode with us got into one. The helper came over and told me that the taxi would take me the rest of the way. He got my suitcase out of the back and gave it to me. I asked about my change. He said that I didn't have to pay the taxi driver, it was already included. I got into the taxi and 6 minutes later I arrived at my hotel.
Summary: 1. Taxi from BAQ to Simon Bolivar 12K
2. Van from Simon Bolivar to Santa Marta 20K
3. Time to Santa Marta from Simon be 1h37m
**If I had known this route beforehand I am sure I could have gotten the first taxi for 10K, then paid 10K for the van, and another 4K to the second taxi for a total of 24K.

El Rodadero
El Rodadero is live and kicking. When I arrived last night there were nothing but families on the beach. I guess all the pros were resting up after carnaval. However, before going to sleep tonight I decided to take a stroll down the beach. They are out in full effect now. I would say there were about 16 SWs on the case. I semi-negotiated with two H-O-T ones, one 25 and her friend 23. I say semi because I never moved the price in either direction. I let them do all the talking. They started out with 100 for 1 and 150 for both of them. I said wait a minute. So that is 75 for each. Well I will take only 1 for 75. I just kept stooping behind the bench they were on and talking to them. Finally they said 100 for both. I asked how much time and they said 1 hour. Well that was fine with me because I should have actually been already sleep so I didn't need much time.
When we arrived at the hotel the night clerk said they couldn't go up. I'm like what the fuck dude. Then the girl told me to just give him a tip. I didn't have any change so I told him that I would straighten him out later. When we got to the room the 25 year old went out on the balcony to smoke. I cornered the 23 year old, Cindy was the name on her ID, and pulled her shirt up and started sucking her tits.
Then she told me I had to pay them first. And Mongering Rule #1 is? I told them that I would only pay after. That is when she went to consult with the friend. They insisted to get paid up front. I tried to deal and told them that I would give them 50 now and 50 after. They didn't want that so I told them to hit the door. I hate that I had to do it and if you could have seen them you would know why. But rules are rules. And if I let them control how and when they get paid you best believe that they would try to control the session. The bottom line is that I still have 100, 000 pesos in my pocket and they are still out on the street broke. Remember the golden rule. If you have the gold you do the ruling. Don't let the peasants rule you.

I have refused many times to pay up front but almost never have had to kick them to the curb, many times I have been able to seal the deal by showing them the money and putting it away. Some girls only ask to get paid up front due to getting stiffed by the local men,it happens frequently to them. Others are just hard core putas looking to control the situation as you pointed out.
Thanks for standing your ground,in the long run it helps all of us.

They are however giving you something quiet valuable upfront as well. The compromise is money "in site" or in arms reach. That's fair in my book.
You can't always have that control. It depends where you monger.

Hotel Betoma
Hotel Betoma is located on Calle 8 with Carrera 2 in El Rodadero. It is 85, 000 pesos for 1 person or 100, 000 for 2 people. I like the hotel itself. It is very comfortable. It has a balcony with a table and chairs, nice A/C, hot water, a refrigerator (every night about 6:30 a lady brings a pitcher of ice water to the room), and free wireless internet. From looking around town I am pretty sure it is one of the best hotel in the greater Santa Marta area.
The only problem that I have with this place is the noise. It is 1:26am and music is blaring from 3 or 4 different places. You can even hear music loud and clear, and able to make out word for word, from the beach which is a block away. And it has happened every night (4) since I arrived. The only peaceful time was about 2 hours ago when the power went out for a while. I sat out on the balcony and I finally was able to think. If you are a person who likes peace and quiet or who is a light sleeper then this is not the place to stay. I am a heavy sleeper and I have been dead tired coming in from diving the past few days, so I haven't had any problems getting to sleep. But when I am awake. Damn I wish they would quiet down. Do they have to make the entire city be involved in their party?

Gentlemen. The greater Santa Marta area consists of 3 sections: El Rodadero, Santa Marta local/town, and Taganga. They are all here together in that order. There is just a mountain range that separates each section from the other. In El Rodadero, which is a popular place to stay, the streets are numbered the same as they are in the Santa Marta local section. When making your reports and giving addresses please specify in which section of the city it is. This would help out greatly.
When I first got here I was looking for Floyd's spot, Merkabar/Welcome Restaurant. I thought I had found the place, but maybe they had changed the name or something. Just like he said, there was a restaurant part with a juice bar together with it. It was Calle 10 with Cra 2. I was sitting there eating and drinking waiting for chicas to show but I never saw any. It finally dawned on me that maybe the place he was talking about was in the Santa Marta portion of the city.
So when I finished diving today I got off the bus in the Santa Marta section in order to do some recon. I found the place right where he said it was, the other Calle 10 with Cra 2. I went in for salchipollo and melon juice and waited for any chicas that might show up. None showed.
After that I decided to look for Club Babilonia which was also mentioned in this thread. I did a google search the night before and there just happened to be a Club Babilonia group on facebook and the address was listed. Calle 12 with Cra 5. I scanned Calle 12 from Cra 4 to Cra 6 and did not see a damn thing. I am telling you there is no mongering in this city that is point and click. But I will discuss that in the next report. I just wanted to ask everyone to make clear which section of town they are discussing.

Well anyway. Just show up in El Rodadero on Cra 2 and there will be plenty of people around in the street trying to shove an apartment down your throat. Some of them even hold signs that say apartment for rent.
I had only planned to stay at my hotel for 1 day until I found an apartment. After checking in I hit the street. This was about 9pm mind you. There was a guy trying to make me get an apartment. He took me to two of them. The first was some lady's basement. She came down and opened it up. It was looking good to me for 70, 000 pesos, A/C and all, until I asked about hot water. She looked at me like I was crazy. Reason being is that hot water is a rarity in Santa Marta.
The tout had faith though. I told him that I was going to go eat. He showed me several restaurants and when I finally settled on one he waited for me to finish eating (about 40 minutes later) then was trying to show me more places. He mentioned this studio here, that studio there. I told him I had to have hot water thought. So the next place he showed me, LOL, was the hotel I was already staying in. Then he tried to take me around the corner to Hotel San Francisco. Apparently, these are two of the few places in town with hot water.
So I decided to keep my hotel. For 15, 000 more pesos/day it's worth it to me to have hot water, free wireless in the room, and maid service everyday.

El Rodadero!
I was traveling in Colombia the past few weeks so decided to check out Santa Marta for the first time. Knowing this ahead of time, I read the forum and decided to just drop in to El Rodadero without reservation, get an apartment and go from there.
The plan worked fine as described by many in this thread although Spanish is a must for good pricing. I looked at 3 units in 3 buildings; the first was too dinghy but good price, the second too expensive with central air but not worth the snooty attitude of the woman showing me the unit nor the uncleanliness of the unit she showed me, including the fridge.
The third was in El Karey which was about right for my taste & budget. I rented half a 2 bedroom, 2 bath split level apartment with balcony view of the entire scene. Got it for COP 100k/day all in.
I didn't go anywhere the entire 6 days I was there. Shit, I didn't even get off my ass to go to Parque Tayrona which is little hard to explain later to your Colombian friends but somehow I managed and that trip will wait till next time.
Everything I needed was right there including street walkers at night.
They started showing around 10 pm. Maybe 10 or 15 total. A few doable. I did one my first night for 90 or 100K, I don't quite remember. Didn't do any other SW's.
One of the SW's was a good looking Tranny. Sucks!
The pix in this post are of the apartment. A few more to follow in subsequent posts.

Schwmm
Santa Marta/Rodero a cool place everyone ought to experience. Nothing else in Colombia quite like the beach there at night. Didn't get to Tayrona myself until the second time there. Don't spare us details. Were you finding the girls all Magdalena-hued and native?

Flamingos!
I don't take a lot of pictures although I like to. The problem for me is that the camera can be an interruption to a good time. So, I have a few pix from El Rodadero but they are by no means all inclusive.
I went to Flamingos one night, probably Thursday night. Very busy with maybeee,,, a couple of dozen women. I think I saw Clinton surrounded by an entourage but it was dark & smokey and from across the club so I'm not sure.
This Caleņa is an example of what COP 150K can get you for take out at Flamingos in El Rodadero. I guess I should have taken more time to look around but I didn't feel like hanging out so I took her since she looked good enough and I had already chatted her up.
I got her down to 150K including barfine to be paid before leaving. The barfines I was quoted were form 50K to 70K. Her body bore no unpleasant surprises, her attitude and cooperativeness during sex were good but then she turned nasty before leaving because I wouldn't agree to any of her pitches for more money. The usual; taxi, hija, propina, etc, etc, etc. I didn't feel she deserved it. Later in the trip, another hooker told me that she was grosera (gross). To be continued.
Anyway, like I said, this is what 150K might get you for take out at Flamingos in El Rodadero.
