Using your phone as wireless modem
regarding internet, i am actually real curious about what others have to say. regarding north coast internet, i have always found booksfirst at nakumatt and the cafe under nyali cinemax as the best, though i haven't been to the latter in a while. it's all pretty bad when compared with nairobi. telkom wireless is opening some offices with internet cafes built in. in nairobi those are becoming nice options. will be interesting to see if they hit the coast.
i'd be interested, though, to hear others' opinions. honestly, i would say get internet on your mobile and run with it. if you have safaricom or zain, go to an office and tell them to connect you to the internet. everything is moving to wireless, and there is a sad lack of investment in cafes. makes it tough. my 2 cents.
thanks for your opinion. i think i'll try the mobile modem option. will have a safaricom sim anyway. connection speeds are much faster and it's much more convenient to sit in my house or my friends restaurant than in a muggy cybercaf.
safaricom offers pre-paid bundles. 300mb/999kes, 700mb/1999kes, 1gb/2499kes. you can use gprs/edge and even 3g (umts, in nairobi and mombasa) !!

all you have to check before is how to setup modem functionality with your mobile.
somewhere i read (musomba?) that you'll have to keep traffic on your connection to keep speed up, so setting up a software to transfer some bytes every minute will be a good idea. outlook will do that for me :)
by the way: is nyali cinemax the building with round roof or the one next to it with the pointed one? i'll add that info on wikimapia.
Bamburi Beach Resort Question
I'm hearing mixed reports on how girl-friendly this place is. I stayed in Fontana last time but the old lady who runs the place is unfriendly and it's far from the Big Tree / Cheers action. Bam Beach Resort quoted me 3500/day for a 1 bdrm apt, but if I can't bring back ladies freely, what's the point.
