Better consider to take one of the overnight trains. Tickets are cheap. 2'nd class Kiev-Nikoalev about 18E max. Ich kann the sogar schlafen. Trains are slow, but very punctual.

My expirience from Russia (St. Petersburg) and Ukraine (Nikolaev) is, that in the big cities you are not in real danger, as long as you stay in the more "touristic" areas, which are in the centre....

In case, you manage it to live in one of these countries for a year, more or less on your own, then you will not be too shy any...
