My experience is that there are more or less always seats on the TSR, maybe July and August are to be avoid, but otherwise you should be able to jump on and off, I am not aware of how the tickets...

I did the trip back in 2002, from Moscow to Vladivostok, there is no action what so ever on the train, but a bunch of happy friendly people and great fun. If you can work out a visa that let you stay...
