I am not a big Ayn Rand fan but charity is not always good. In the Philippines, charity is very harmful when practiced without very specific conditions that increases the recipients' self-reliance. Too often giving Filipinas cash just makes beggars of them, as this creates the expectation that foreigners should give handouts from their bottomless pockets. That Western Union remittance may very well lead to the girl paying for a few liters of Red Horse beer, a cartoon of cigarettes, and a room at Sogo where her drunken trike driver boyfriend will fill her with cream pies. She will then begin the New Year as an expectant mother, and ask you for cash to pay for the birth, pampers, and milk, as the trike driver boyfriend has ran off.
Sorry if you find this upsetting but I have seen this kind of thing before, and contributed to it in the past before seeing the unintended train wrecks that resulted. I created my share of monsters. Paying directly for medical attention or job training is good charity. Giving a Pinay cash is bad charity.
Pinays blow cash the same day it hits their hands. This is the real reason they do not have bank accounts. Even if you send her 50,000 pesos, she will blow it within 24 to 48 hours, and she may not buy anything that benefits her over the long term.

Sometimes I would buy the kettle and rice cooker instead of cash as this is more beneficial. In the past I would take the to the supermarket and fill a basket or two. They choose and invariably is rice and hot dogs, tuna etc. That gesture is small to us but large to them plus of you see her again you will get a good GFE etc and I she has friends and shares you are in clover.
As for 'expenses' add the list fees for exams, fees for next semester or they owe credit and kid / sister etc can't attend until is paid before Christmas. One old friend got a note from one of his ladies, typed but unsigned supposedly from the landlady asking for pesos (not an insubstantial amount) for building repairs on the place she rents as an advance of the girl's rent. Thus her landlady wanted him to pay for the house repairs and assumed this could be advanced rental for the girl. He can't see how he benefits from this given he won't be back the country for a long time. Logic never strong for some LOL.

Lots of girls I am in contact with are dropping hints that Christmas is fast approaching. A few have been more direct and have said the bills are mounting up, need to travel to the province, mom's had an appendix operation etc and could I help? I've just ignored them and changed to the topic to the weather or have just deleted the rather pesky ones.
There's one sweetie who has a heart of gold and hasn't mentioned a thing about Christmas or money. She's going to be beneficiary of Engine Driver's benevolent fund. So I asked this girl for her bank account details so I can transfer some money through Western Union. I was a little shocked when she said she doesn't have a bank account. Then it dawned on me that some people are so poor, they have no need for a bank account, living a hand to mouth existence. Like DG said, some girls don't even own a kettle or a rice cooker.
Not a problem. I will send the money to WU in Makati and she can just pick up the cash after showing her ID and the password for the transaction.
Charity is good.

Lots of competition. Easy to get started in a low end restaurant.
Rely on low paid employees, lots of no shows of staff and one bad day for a staff member can [CodeWord140] off lots of customers.
You are at the mercy of suppliers.
Customers have lots of options, go to your place, go elsewhere, eat and drink at home etc.
Big risk on what and how much supplies to order, will you have enough people in to eat it or will they stay home because of weather? Running out just about as bad, people will go next door and may like it better there.

Apart from the obvious 'do you trust any family member of your ex wife?' then there is adage that if you want to make a million in the Philippines then bring 10 million.
Do you think bars make money? Some for sale if that your preference but I know ex bar owners who lost a packet for various reasons. Also I no some who pinoy partners were nice at first as the foreigner paid the inventory then had him arrested on a charge and then he left the country with the debts and his pinoy partners kept the assets.
Strange old world sometimes and each to his own but I would search the board for some old information on this, speak with some expat bar owners and get a feel. If you want to put your money and earn interest I can send you my bank account details LOL Safer there by far LOL.

Turns out she didn't get any of the 5 k, it all went to the manager for the time plus half of what the manager should have gotten. Apparently out of the 400 peso massage the girl got 100 plus half of the tip. If you look the girls uniform only has a few pockets.
And they come to work empty pocket plus their cell phone. This girl was part of a 8-10 girl staff. They all roomed together and and couldn't go anywhere by themselves. Also most of the girls were from the same city in Pampanga. I do believe these girls were closely watched and there will be some kind of rate to be paid if you take them on a trip.

I just paid the equivalent of her basic wage prorated for two weeks. Hence she got 1500 tip every day* she was with me but no BF, drink, dancing etc money. She was happy with this.
* at the time Sabang girls were 1500+1500 and they got a cut of drinks and dancing money.
The whole story, good and bad:

This might have been a sob story but it would't surprise me if it was true. So be prepared that you have to pay her 'manager' too (indirectly) when you take her on a holiday.

For the first time ever in my mongering life, I am thinking about taking a local girl with me to a beach side holiday resort in the Philippines. This girl works for a Makati based massage company and has her own profile on WeChat and TanTan as well. The procedure is that you make contact with the company or the girl directly and she comes to your hotel room for a massage at 500 PHP / hour. She is paid commission for the basic massage. Any money she makes on up-selling eg. hand job, blow job, B2 B or full service goes directly to her.
The question I have is what sort of EWR payment would I need to make to her boss so that she can skip work for a few days? Also, what would be an appropriate daily tip for her? I would only pop once a day. I would cover all travel expenses.
I haven't raised this with her yet as I don't want her to get her expectations up in the event I decide to travel on my own.

OK so this maybe a stupid question But I am trying to learn about the rules there.
So Stocks where good to me this last year and I been doing some investing in other countries. I have already done some in Colombia, and Dominican Republic since I go there a lot. So now I am looking towards the Phils. I have already talked to a family member of my ex-wife there. And going to start a restaurant in a small city, and the price is not bad at all. But now I want to do more. I want to do some thing like a bar, or a club in a big spot. Does anybody have any info on this.

Spain. And Barcelona is Spanish. Leads the way. There is nothing different here from supermarkets. LBFMs are on the way out and, with good programming, the sex dolls have more life to them. The sex dolls can even talk and hold as good a conversation as the farmers' daughters. The hookers in Spain are not happy campers. They are Luddites.
I imagine the Koreans would be big into all this.
