Boyfriends beating their girlfriends on occasion is part of the culture (unfortunately). The male machismo control thing. There's even a name for it. Not long ago one of my girls showed up at my place for her usual afternoon time, with a large knot / bruise on her forhead, running from inside the hairline (hidden under the hair) to just below (outside) the hairline, about an inch of the raised welt was showing on her forhead. Your boyfie do that sweetie? "Yes". He curious to where you were in the afternoon a few days ago (when she was with me)? "No. House not clean. He like clean". Do I have it right sweetie? You have the trabaho and bring home the rice. He has not worked in 10 months and plays video games at piso-net. He does not help clean the house? "No of course not. Clean is my job. He hit to making me clean. A guy can do that". If the girl accepts it (and she is not the only one who shows up with bruises), its just different culture. I don't like it, but there it is.

But when I put accidentally a partly nude pic of my pinay on facebook for 10 seconds the whole village advises to report me to the police. Yes to get bribe money from me, so my girl can share that with all her friends.

I'm afraid you are right. It's largely a matter of trust. One reason there are very few wealthy Filipinos in jail but quite a number of at least formerly wealthy foreigners is that well connected Filipinos will usually have some family friend who is a lawyer or at least knows someone that can be trusted. For foreigners it is an absolute nightmare situation. The Embassies are essentially completely useless. All they can do is provide a list of the most prestigious and expensive law firms in the country, most of whom are general practices with little or no interest in representing foreigners on sex or drug related charges. For several years the received wisdom on ISG was that Atty Solima was the guy to go to at least in Cebu. This view emanated principally from DS who was a big fan. Sadly Solima, who had an extremely "pungent" reputation, was gunned down along with his wife shortly before DS's conviction and DS ended up with around a century of sentences. The most effective Atty will depend on the nature of the trouble you get in, the evidence against you, the stage of the proceedings and the people you are dealing with and your location. In terms of location. The highest quality (and 2 x more expensive) lawyers are based in Manila. If you are arrested in Cebu it would probably make sense to get a Cebu lawyer. In smaller places, the quality of criminal lawyers will be generally be so poor that you maybe forced to fly someone in from Manila or Cebu to defend you (which can become very expensive given that hearings are scheduled in 10-20 minutes slots at intervals of 1-3 months) and are usually cancelled / postponed on at least 50% of occasions. The most "professional" attys are also those who tend to "play by the book" , the difficulty with this is that the book can take many years to "play out" as it were which is disastrous if you have been charged with a non bailable offense..

Seems kind of weird the way the main Philippines page is set up...there are links to Dumaguete, Davao, Olangapo, etc, but not Cebu. I see now there is a link way down in the User blog to Cebu...seems kind of poorly organized. If it were me, I would spend a little time reorganizing the main page...just sayin'

I agree to some moderation otherwise the forum would become a list of mudslinging or computer generated spam. However, it should be only when warranted and be withdrawn after a suitable period. I miss many posts because they only appear well down the list and a day or two after they are written (often after the topic of discussion has moved on).

Very hard to get it withdrawn once you are moderated.

It is truly a pain to see managers post inane stuff and lots of questions but never get scolded by the admin. Yet when others say RTFF they are reminded to be nice or face sanctions.

Many are moderated as some poster with say less then 20 is too sensitive to being told to RTFF. Mainly the managers as we nickname them. Plenty mongers I know here in moderation and is very annoying that the post appears 24 hours later and thus is missed.

AI am moderated as long time back someone said I was rude to them for pointing out they had roughly 50 posts, all questions, no substance and no PM. Ces't la vie.

More important stuff to worry about than being moderated or not I suppose LOL.

Myself, I have all important things (cash notes, card / s, passport, air ticket) on me, not left behind in room. I don't use hotel safes, have heard stories of them being emptied and staff person responsible taking off and never seen again, LOL.

Airport staff being able to open a suitcase with a ball pen and place drugs inside is one to be concerned about, not so much curious hookers / cleaners in room (they'd get nothing much from my suitcase) methinks.

So that plastic security wrapping, around the suitcase, available at exiting western world airports for 20 dollars, and 5 dollars exiting Phils etc, is worth re-considering. Control, control.

I've been at this for a very long time now and, though I've never had an issue with theft, I did learn quite a while ago that it's easier and safer to travel with nothing but carry-on luggage. I don't remember the last time I actually checked a bag. This avoids any possibility of someone messing with your luggage between the time it leaves your hands and the time you retrieve it. Also, I never carry more cash than I need for a day or two and credit / debit cards are always on my person. I never take any form of mass transportation in third world countries and rarely flag taxis from the street, preferring hotel cars or the use of Grab or Uber. For me, this is less paranoia than common sense.
