gentlemen,
i spent the best part of two years "22 months" in the great land of the pi. i am not an expert, know all, or person who knows more than most families. i did manage to take in facts, figures and many notes on the general life, and culture of the vast areas in the pi.
first i would like to say i never knew of the vast wealth, that many travelers had at there fingertips. i myself am just a working stiff, yes everyday and night here at home in the family biz. its hard to let go of 50 years in a business that is about to be passed down, anywho. i also had a somewhat close friend that had settled in the area"subic" years before as a guide so to speek. so here i go, and yes it is true, what many had said before i left, beautiful gals young and old, and a great discount on the pocket.
after meeting my bud he wanted to get me up to speed with the day and night biz at hand "girls". this seemed ok to me and he gave me the crash course. please note this was his school of biz, not to be confused with mine. most days started off for me with a light breakfast, and he strolled in after 10 am to lay down the exploits of the day. a local, he had a regular bunch he played cards, darts, and other waste of time games with each and every day.thats because he and most living here have nothing better to do. please don't get me wrong thats a great life if you are brain dead, drunk, or just tired of life in general."just my personal take on the subject"
after a short time i took what pearls he had given me and i headed out for greener pastures. i found my self in ac, manila, cebu, and other wonderful areas. like i said before i met many many people both locals and tourists. i can only say that most were ok and some hard to accept.
many here (the isg board)ask the same questions over and over about the cost, yes it is cheeper for a beer, lunch, rooms on the beach but watch out. if you want to live in somewhat comfort it costs money!
you want to have several playmates daytime, nightime, it costs money. i have seen guys take a folding chair and walk out into the bay sit down chest deep and require the waitress to deliver there dirink to them. yes like i said big money, rich, wealth, bigdeals, bigshots."listen to the rest i'm not finished"
i took notes as to the performance "bigdeal water dogs"at hand and after a while the drinks started to dry up, the high end liquor was down to beer. the owner of the hotel was quietly talking about when will i get paid. the other side of the paper has a story of the bigtimer that after 2 months had to have the motel owner purchase him a 1 way ticket home. there was another fello who was the owner of a vast empire in real estate. i had the honor of meeting, his dad, and brother,i met several weeks before. when the wealthy big brother finaly hit town he was from what i could tell not much better than most curbside panhandlers.i expected donald trump,or at the verry least a well dressed, well rounded chap.what i saw was drunken lowlife that was getting his action in ac curbside, and was rolled more than once or twice.
in short, i never met a regular guy! just many big deals, who were just that, over there, not at home. you must remember that the wonderful gals here do not think of us as regular, we are from a rich country thus we are indeed rich.
you do not have to play a game guys when you get there, just be yourself and enjoy what the area has to offer. as far as the gals go they are not stupid in any way please remember this. they are not gonna stay with a drunken abusive mabaho piece of shit any more than a gal from anyother place would. do most of the gals play games i would say yes but how many guys do ha?
the game is not so different anywhere when you look at the big picture. the guy on vacation wants variety and it is there, he wants what he wants and pays for things just like anywhere else. please note that there are many scamms run by both locals and visitors alike, "yes i trust that guy he is from the same state, province, country, town, troop, ship or whatever the fuck" most guys have not the brains left to use, after staying here anylength of time.they should go home, restock, work a while and return flush. i have seen the big fish sail off with nada on more than one occasion. then you have the guys on a limited income of old age, and whatever else they git from there many years of packing a lunch. you can have a nice life but keep in mind the cost of day to day expensives because it can add up quick.
treat the girls with 75% respect and you will get 110% back 99 times out of a hundred. remember to rent, never buy a home because you can not be the sole owner. stay away from anybody looking for an investor, partner, ect.
be yourself, enjoy the heat, sun, gals, and others and don't trust everything you here. keep your passport up to date, keep your personal things locked up at all times.
after all my guide"mentor" tried to instill in me, he did not listen to his own words.he purchased a nice home, and now
is looking for a new place to live, after 8 plus years here. this was the first time he went for the sale over the rental.could be he was way too smart for his own good. he thought he was smarter than everyone that told him, do not do it. 40-50 grand later he has no house, no cash back, and nobody to cry too but himself.if you enjoy this place take your time, look around, the place will be there when you get back.just look, listen, and never be in a rush to be a bigshot! afterall i have seen guys 60 plus calling there sisters for money, trust me it happens.
have fun, stay sharp, and never be too trusting.

Regarding fraud, it's a big deal, you should not mind that they want to check up on you. I have made it a point to contact my bank and give them my itinerary whenever I am about to travel overseas and I have never had a problem with them.

In terms of the 3% thing-shop around and ask all of your credit card companies. Some cards are 1% or will lower to that rate if you have been a good customer.
The ATM fees, I dunno where you are located, but many of the smaller banks or credit unions will let you build your own account and select a number of premium features such as rebates of any ATM fees for use of ATM's other than that particular banks for free. I found one a few months ago that offered me this, gave me an IPOD for opening an account, and after 6 months gave me $150 as a "loyalty" gift. I set up an account at this bank specifically for overseas trips and just transfer money in a week or so before I leave. I never use the account for anything other than trips.

Posts: 836As I mentioned in my post, I really can't recall.
Again, all you have to do is email the particular place and they will provide the info.
I wound up at Captain Greggs. Place was cheap/clean. My nephew did not like the aircon, he left after one night. I thought it was adequate.
We all agreed the food was very good.

Not sure which thread to post this on. My American bank credit card charges me a 3% foreign transaction fee everytime I use it in asia. The bank is security-strict, forcing me to call them for many purchases I'm trying to make. I have to call them in advance just to purchase a CebuPacific airline ticket or it gets denied. Can anyone recommend a Visa card that doesn't have these restrictions? Should I apply for one in philippines at one of the banks? I'm tired of paying 15 cents on each $5 purchase for lunch.
Also the ATM thing, my bank hits me with a charge each time I use it at an ATM that is not theirs. Should I open an account at a bank there, and get one of their ATM cards?

For diving consider Anilao or for diving and girls Subic. Both involve only land travel.

I do have a concern about the weather when returning as I need to get back into manila to catch a flight to bangkok that leaves at 9.35pm that night. Guess I can keep an eye on the weather reports the day before I leave.

I am always looking for something new. On a recent trip I checked out Paranaques, I think it was Airport Road. There are tons of girlie bars. These cater to the locals, is definitly slumming even comparied to Ermita, but I had no problem and it was a fun diversion. I have not seen this mentioned on the board.
They seem to fall into three categories:
Cafe. And I use the word loosely. Mostly these are small bars, some are karaoke, with "private" rooms upstairs. Very cheap and the girls are right off the bus. Some of the private rooms are no more than a tiny closet with two chairs. Generally give these a miss.
Disco/live music – there was at least one big one with a good band. It was all locals inside but being the only foreigner I was getting lots of attention.
Strip tease shows – there are a number of these, especially closer to Roxas Blvd. Some are higher end (Miss Siagon? ) with beautiful women and private rooms, thought he prices still were not very high. Some are lower. The first one I walked in and there were 10 naked women strutting up and down the stage. Nice. After this show a beautiful girl came out and did her routine. Once she was nude she jumped off the stage and into my lap. My first reaction was how much is this going to cost, but it was cheap. I assume that the girls go out, but did not check. Am loyal to LA Café LOL
Anyone else try it?
Note of caution: you need to be careful mixing it up with the local guys in these places. Be polite and show respect. If threatened, back off.

There are really on a few things to do in Puerto Galera: dive, eat, massage, go to discos and pick up girls. The food is cheap and plentiful. The massage places I visited were just for legit massage, but quite good and leaving you too horny. But the emphasis was on diving and girls.
Be warned that the ferry services to Puerto are very susceptible to weather. If it rains you might get stuck for extra days. Build flexibility into your schedule.
How were you planning to get there?

Posts: 836Depends on the hotel, most don't care - a few (very few) do. I e mailed a place that caters to divers, can't remember the name just now, but they told me outright they cater to divers not mongers. Best is to e mail the hotel and find out.

I am going diving in Puerto Galera next weekend and will be staying in sabang. Does anyone know if taking a girl from the gogo's back to your hotel is an issue considering it is such a small place. Do they have a joiner fee ?
Thanks

Posts: 11Share a ride to Ac?
Arriving July 25th at 22:30 at NAIA , Northwest flight #71 from Detroit via Nagoya. I have booked a car to Angeles from Beeline Travel. Any one want to share ? Anyone on same flight? Northwest flight #1 also arrives 15 minutes earlier at 22:15 from Tokyo.
I am leaving Ac on August 5th. I am on Northwest flight #2 that leaves NAIA at 7:45am. I am planning on leaving AC around 3:45am.
I am always so early at the airport but im always afraid of missing my flight :)
