OK, even the insults have not discouraged me, and I have already made tentative airline reservations to Manila with the plan to spend part or most of the trip in Davao, but I must admit the security issues you mentioned are a bit concerning.

I'm still here, got busy at work and had password problems.

Just put my wife on the plane to the Philippines, money was tight, but she's pregnant, wanted her to have a trip before the baby is born in July. Just to corroborate the words of wisdom from my friend the Dragon Slayer. He's about 6'4' and I'm about 5'6", he's a jock while I am not, he's in his 40's and I just turned 60, he's in Finance, and I'm a Sociologist. In other words, two completely different guys, but the success rate has been about equal and significantly high. Simply put, with a little patience, some experience, and a willingness to hang out a bit, Davao can be a great place.

I have, on about 3 occassions, visited the casas here, more from curiousity than necessity. As DS says, they're not necessary, but I did have a lot of fun with girls from two of the places I visited. The prices are highly negotiable and I think I paid about PhP1,500 for the entire night. I found a couple of of really adorably chicks, and all of the times I went, I went with taxi drivers. DS is right though, I'm sure the cab drivers get a commission which raises the price.

As far as the "corner" goes, the DS is also correct. However, it really depends on the time of night you go there. Also, if there's no action there, the odds are good that there will be some action elsewhere on the street, which just has not yet migrated to the convenience store.

Finally, the only time in my experience that money becomes an issue here is when guys raise the "How much is this going to cost me?" question beforehand. I never mention money, and if the girl does, I drop her immediately. This works most of the time here. Again, I don't want to oversell Davao. It's no paradise. It's not a particularly pretty city, and it's delights are not immediately obvious to the newly-arrived. It does not have a plethora of glitzy, fine restuarants and clubs, and it has only a few up-market discos. It has no urban environment as attractive as Makati and it does not have as many fine hotels as Manila. It's a different scene entirely, and the first time visitor here has to be willing to take the time to discover the appeal of the place.

Taxi drivers will take you ONLY to a place that will pay them money for bringing the "sucker". In 16 years of 3-7 trips/Year to S.E. Asia and Paciic Rim I never allowed a cab driver to fucking suggest anything. Price you pay is increased by his "fee" plus the "stupidity factor".
