Another Tip from your Uncle Vinnie.

Filipinos are less likely to try to screw over one of their own as compared to a white guy! This is not always true but as I said. Less likely.

Try to give the money to one of the girls you barfine. Of course make sure you keep your happy hairy ass right outside the money exchange place and make sure the girl knows you want a receipt. When standing outside stand out of sight of the money changer inside.

Also, make sure the girl is somewhat trustworthy. How do you know that you ask? Well, if you have the girl with you for 2 or more days and she seems pretty cool and you treated her well. Then chances are she won't screw you too badly. Of course there are exceptions to this.

As Good Enough replied to you. ATM's are cool too but the problem is most ATM's now a days only let you take out 4000 pesos PER TRANSACTION until you hit your card's limit or the ATM's limit. I think the most I got out of an ATM was 40K pesos. That was an ATM in Park Square (Glorietta Mall). My card had a $500 limit.

Another thing you can try is asking the hotel front desk to do a cash advance against the credit card. Some will. Some won't. Depends on how lazy the clerk is (and most are! ) and also depends on hotel policy. If the clerk gives you a hard time ask for a manager and be polite!

As always be wary but you can sometimes get away with things.

I have a question. I have a couple of $100 bills that have some minor problems. One has a date stamp in ink and the other one small burn hole. The money changer places either will not exchange it or want to give me like 75% face value for it, which is a flipping rip off because it is legal tender. These are NOT badly mutilated bills, but not perfect so I guess it looks like I will have a hard time to exchange them.

QUESTION: Where can I exchange the bills with no problems?
ADVICE: Check EVERY SINGLE BILL before you come if you are bringing cash to exchange. They must be new and in good shape. I've been here many times, but never had a problem before this trip. I guess the bank at home that I use just keeps good bills, but this time got 2 bad ones.

As for LA cafe, the URL has been posted a few times, including by me. I don't have it handy now.

I don't know if this helps but LA Cafe is in Ermita, EDSA is near the intersection of EDSA and Roxas in Pasay (near the airportf) and Burgos is in Makati just off of Makati Ave.

Also be careful about serial numbers. There was a certain series, CB or CL or something like that, that was hard to change in some countries.

Also it's better to avoid 1996 series bills, the first year for the new design, as these are also not easily changed in some places.

What you ran into is not at all unusual, though I'm not sure why it happens, but it does, and not only in Manila. If I were you, I would forget trying to exchange the money and use it once you get home. In the meantime, use your ATM.

There was an interesting article in the New York Times yesterday or today, stressing that, as a rule, the least expansive mode of money changing is the ATM, as the charges are far less than those imposed by money changers and banks. I live here, and I never carry US cash and always use the machines when I need to convert $ to pesos.
