Choose wisely and do your research on cultural differences. Lots of pitfalls.

It is a rare occurrence to meet a filipina who does not eventually try to siphon some of your cash for her extended family. They will play the long game as they know there is a huge payoff in either cash or immigration. It does not matter if it's a farm-girl or a doctor.

Case in point. In the early 1980's when I was in my late 20's and a seasoned PI enthusiast I met a doctor in Manila at a party. I was in the Navy at the time. We spoke all of 30-minutes and later exchanged a few letters. A few months later I was at a follow-on duty assignment in London, UK and she proposed marriage, telling me something about offering me her body, or something like that. I'm thinking WTF?

It was obvious it was an immigration attempt, like every other filipina I met during a 3-year assignment in Subic. Only this one had a professional job.

In another example I met, through a friend, a member of the "Crispa" basketball team and his circle of well to do friends. We went out for drinks. Well, when the bill came around they all expected me to pay and made excuses they did not have enough money although they were staying at a nice hotel.

I think it's an ingrained behavior to circle the wagons and milk the foreigner to the benefit of the clan. Therefore I go in with my eyes open. I'll be there again this June and will treat the girls well, pay my way, have fun and return home.

If you are expecting any young girl from anywhere in the world to be genuinely excited to spend the rest of her life with an old man I've got a bridge to sell you. She is compromising for financial security and a sense of duty / sacrifice to her family.

If I were to take the plunge I would not marry. I would move to an upscale Philippine Island seaside community and develop a social network of filipina "friends with benefits".

That's just my thoughts for now. For now, I'm not currently seeking more than fun.

Just picking up on the topic raised by Gen X Baer and FuriousGeorge of is Makati expensive, I would say that yes, Makati is a lot more expensive than pre-pandemic, and is the most expensive place in the Philippines for our hobby.

To put this into context, the main customer base that visited P. Burgos street pre-pandemic was basically 3 categories of customers 1) business travelers, 2) those on holiday in the Philippines, 3) local ex-pats; some of the local Philippines did visit P. Burgos Street, but it was very clearly aimed at high volume short stay ex-pats who wanted fun, and was priced accordingly.

Since P. Burgos street has re-opened over the last 5 months following COVID there are a few distinct differences between now and pre-pandemic. 1) the amount of venues open is I would estimate 1/4 what it used to be, so competition isn't truly there yet; 2) the amount of available customers is a lot less than before with about 50% of the customers I see as category 1 and 2 as mentioned above while the rest are local ex-pats (myself now included). The reason for this is simple, for business travelers, most local businesses are still mostly working 75% from home, so there is little point in travelling and risking quarantine for limited days of actual business interaction currently, and while International travel is open, we still don't see the availability in flights as before combined with high risk still of getting trapped or stuck somewhere at least for the time being.

So less high spending customers, less venues open, of course the bars that are open will try to get as much as then can from those who turn up (increased bar fines and drinks), another small impact is that the local currency is slowly gaining in strength against some of the major currencies, so those converting money across are starting to get a little less bang for their buck.

The only real positive from this current situation is in those places that are open, it is somewhat of a buyers market (I. E. Picking the girl who appeals to you the most), and there is an influx of higher quality young ladies I would say, combined with a fairly high turn over rate as I tend to see lots of new faces in bars I go back to.

The bar fine which is set by the bar in general has gone up, mostly it's between 3-4 K (pre-pandemic was 2-3 k) which does not include the fun time with the girl, that will cost extra, and usually you need to buy a couple of ladies drinks when deciding and negotiating with the lady in question, ladies drinks range from 300-350 Php in my experience, maybe a bit more some places but I could have been drunk then.

My recent observations in updates to the street is that Bourbon Bar which survived in the pandemic by being a restaurant and bar, has now got rid of the pool table and is on a path to being a girly bar, very pushy in there with trying to get you to buy ladies drinks and offer lucky tips. The food is still OK there, for now.

For those interested: Friday night is by far the busiest night, with the widest selection of ladies available, followed by Thursday and the other mid-week days. On Sundays there is no girly bars open much before 8 pm, the only exception I saw was Bourbon (I checked yesterday), I think during the week the girly bars might be open a little earlier.

My choices here (as an local ex-pat) are fairly limited as to where I go in Manila, it's basically P. Burgos for bar hopping and a wider good selection of ladies (and higher prices), or I can take a taxi and head to LA Café, which is cheaper by a long shot, but has less choice in ladies and venues in the area. The EDSA complex that opened some years ago didn't make it through the pandemic and is unlikely to re-open as I understand it. Other choices include going to night clubs such as Royal and some in other areas, but that is a topic for another thread of which there are a lot more experienced forum members than I am in that area.

Outside of that, it's excursions out of Manila to Angeles and other areas, which is cheaper again than anywhere in Manila in general, I guess it's down to your situation, location and available time as to where you choose go.

It wasn't my first night or second night but I remember on the third night the girl I was holding had such rough hands. I was questioning whether I had a brickie or a ladyboy. It does not matter if the parents are alive. It is their extended family who are the problem if you marry. There will always be demands for this and that. Case in point. Grab is a ***** now a days for some reason but after 1 hour of searching got one ride over.

Highway toll: 180 PHP (I think).

Atmosphere: Semi club with a small stage in middle with poles. This was around midnight and wasn't packed. Probably due to rain.
