Last month I saw 4 or 5 guys with long layovers try to leave the airport. One guy even had a reservation at a hotel. They were all told that if they were staying for less than 24 hours for a connecting flight, they needed to apply ahead of time for an exception from immigration and needed a letter from the airline to leave the airport. They argued with immigration for hours but none of them were allowed to leave. So unless they changed the rule in the last few weeks, have fun sleeping in the airport.

I think that only applies for flights coming from abroad, because I took a flight back on April from Negros to Palawan with 8 hours stop in Manila, I was able to leave the airport party with my girl for 5 hours (it was a night layover) then I don't remember how I ended up in Palawan because I got so drunk that I blackout (I mix beer with hard liquor) my girl took good care of me even thought she said I embarrass her in the airport, that was the drunkest I ever got in the last 3-4 years!

If I was those guys and I wanted to hook up (since he said he book a hotel room) I will buy an International flight to Manila and stay 1 night there and then flight the next day to whatever province he was going.

I have done that once before, it works if you have a living partner or wife waiting for you in the province, you can just tell her that you will arrive late in Manila (but of course arrive early) and you had to wait for your next flight 9-10 hours at the airport (tell her you didn't have load since you just arrived in the country, so she won't call you). If all this works you can easily have 1 free night in Manila without her ever finding out!

I think even if you have a connecting flight to another foreign destination you can still leave the airport and come back as long as you fill out the forms required to enter. I guess if you tell the immigration that you are just staying for a few hours they may not let you in asking to wait in the airport for the next flight. In Singapore I have gone to town during 10 hours layover and came back. Do not know if Philippine immigration is any different.

In Singapore I have cleared immigration for an hour to send off a friend BUT only one entry / exit per calendar day. Similar in HK for a day of work visits.

For my trip to Manila I can't think of any reason why I cannot clear immigration for a few hours. I arrive, I enter with the standard questions. Why are you here?, how long you stay? To that last question I just say "one day".

I already will have my outbound boarding pass so when I return to airport I'll just go directly to security and depart.

Apology, I might not have been clear enough. Its not clear if you will have any domestic travel. Travel from the US to Manila is international. But your outbound trip from Manila, is that domestic? Are you flying from Manila to Cebu / Surigao / other (domestic)? That might require you to go thru arrivals Immigration at NAIA, then transit to your MNL-Cebu domestic flight (possibly a taxi ride to a different terminal). Once thru Immigration, you could depart the airport for your short-time, then return to the airport for your domestic flight to Cebu.

If your outbound trip from Manila is to a foreign country, then you will probably not pass thru arrivals Immigration; you would probably just head to your International flight gate, and you might not be able to depart the airport.

If you purchased your tickets online, you might already have received instructions on whether you are transiting (internationally only) or arriving (domestic flight), and how to collect your luggage. Alternately you can contact any travel agent in the US and give them your flight info, and they can tell you if you will be able to depart the airport and return. Or alternately, contact your airline in advance and ask them. Other gents weigh in.

Where did you pick up Covid? Manila, the plane? How bad was it? First time? Vaxxed?

I am fully vaxxed + boostered, so probably caught it there, because symptoms developed 2 days after I got back to Singapore. It was pretty bad in the sense that first 3-4 days I had a nasty dry cough. Then low fever and general aches and pains plus felt exhausted / tired all the time for about 10 days.

Interesting. I wrote a long reply post to add to WC but it didn't appear. Not sure if KM or AP will hit the ground in Manila first. My concern was hidden layovers were not a problem pre Covid. Nowadays, there might will be more controls. For arrivals, you need to meet the Philippines arrival requirements as well as your final destination arrival requirements. So I am not sure if you can get back into the terminal on the return. Some places still require a PCR test.

GXB is right. Choose one of these areas (not both): Malate, or Makati.

If Malate, make an advance reservation at Sogo Mabini St, for about $30-$40 US dollars. Taxi there and drop your luggage. Taxi (or walk if feeling brave) to LA Cafe, find a looker (don't dick around, just find a looker), tell her exactly what you want (ahem, be complete with your wants, don't leave anything out or to the imagination, including the time you want her to stay with you, and the number of pops), and ask her how much she wants for that. Do NOT dicker. Do not tell her that you are here on a short 12 hour layover. The girl will probably want p5-10 K. Given your short time range, don't worry about overpaying. Just say yes. Taxi with her back to Sogo, get your rocks off, turn her loose, and taxi back to NAIA.
