I have never had issues or been stopped anywhere in the Philippines.

I don't recall the name of the hotel but I did look at one near Burgos street that stated in its profile on a booking site that only registered guests were allowed into the rooms.

I'd advise a quick phone call or a email to make sure, however even in places that are restrictive on guests (Dubai) , afternoons and early evenings are usually a lot laxer in enforcement.

Personally I don't care if they have to show and or leave ID, it is for my safety. I actually like it when the desk calls and asks if its OK for them to leave when they recover their ID.

Sammon suggested on way and that works but just walk in with 2 girls and go to the room. Hotels don't care and the guys on the desk may be jealous but so what. Have done this many times and in Cebu had 3 on the room at the same time and no one asked for ID etc just walk in and went to room.

Quality is the key word here. It is hard to find a good cup of coffee in PH. A good cup of coffee costing twice as much as a cheap cup is worth it to me. I voluntary pay the double price for a cup of good quality coffee.

I agree with that DG. We pay what we feel and some like to be (and boast about) being a cheap Charlie while others get along with the business, are picky about the quality and pay more.

Best advice I can give you is walk in with one girl first. Usually if it is at night the security and front desk ask for I. The. If they keep the I. The you are out of luck. If they do not go to the room wait for an hour or so and go out and bring the other girl in as long as the hotel has no issues with you having one girl because you booked for two people.

If this works assuming the front desk thinks the first girl has already gone before you brought the second girl in.

Usually in the daytime nobody will bother you even if two girls come in by themselves.

You must work in sales. I understand what you are saying but as others have pointed out the price paid does not always reflect the value received. I pay my main squeeze in the Caribbean 4000 pesos (roughly $88), twice the normal amount, but she's drop dead gorgeous 42 F cup tits (not fat) and lets me video the whole thing, always provides superb service with a big smile. I ran an independent consultancy for a few years. After getting a few assignments to build my credibility, I doubled my prices. This also doubled my business or quadrupled my income. One client when informed of my doubling my rates said that he was initially not going to hire me because if I thought that I was only worth my initial rate then I was not worth his business. I explained that the initial rate was a bit of a loss leader to get the initial track record established and he laughed while signing a contract at the new rate.

There is a tendency to value something based on what you pay for it but I always found in business that if you treat your suppliers well they will return the favour in some manner, either faster delivery, upgrades, advance notice of new products and sales or making you a favoured customer when supplies are tight. You treat them well by not quibbling over nickles and dimes, paying promptly and accepting that they are human and will also make occasional mistakes.

Mongering business is the same. The girls are experts at sizing us up, they know when they are going with a gentleman or a cheap charlie and act accordingly.

3 months ago I took the Yellow taxi from T1 a Pasay hotel. As he left the airport I reminded him to turn on the meter. He acted like he did but didn't. At the hotel he said the meter must have broke and said 400 for about a 120 pesos fare. I got my bags out and had the hotel people take them inside. I paid him 150 and afterwards realized I was too nice about it. This time I wasn't.

2 times out of 2 trys and I am believing this is standard operating procedure again for Yellow taxis. I suggest we make this our SOP to patiently get your bags out and walk away if this happens to you.

I arrived at Terminal 1 and got a Yellow taxi to Makati hotel. We took the skyway and there was no traffic to speak of. Getting on to the skyway I noticed the meter was already past 200. I mentioned he had a fast meter but he said it was working fine. By the time we got to my hotel the meter was 675 pesos. I just patiently got my bags out and got the hotel guys to take my baggage inside then confronted the driver about the meter. I said usual charge was 250 and I would pay him that. He proceeded to argue about it and I dropped my offer down to 150.

Then he said he would take 250 and I told him that it was too late for 250. He argued a bit more and I decided to screw him and walked away. My last words to him was "you tried to screw me and now I am screwing you, you lost today".

Chuckle. I agree that in the states poor people often vote against their economic interests. Two possible explanations. One, many are not very bright and are easily duped by smart people with money and access to a public microphone to use in marketing and lobbying to protect (and increase) their own wealth. Two, in a country that entertains the individualistic value that people succeed by pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps, many poor people entertain the myth that they too will someday be wealthy, so they want institutions in place that will support their imagined future run at riches. I'd love to know why this pattern exists in Singapore as well.

Keep in mind that most taxi drivers in the Philippines, as elsewhere, do not own their own taxis. So cab drivers are small business owners only in the sense that they own their own time. In the Philippines most taxis are owned in fleets by wealthier individuals. In an earlier post GE explained the substantial daily lease that drivers pay to owners, in addition to paying for the fuel they consume. So profit for the fleet owners turns only indirectly on the individual fare rates. More directly, their profit turns on the daily lease rate that they charge to the drivers. So the politics about fares affects the drivers more directly than the owners, and, as I suggested earlier, the drivers, as poor people, don't heft very much clout in changing the system.

If they don't have a boss and work for a wage they're independent contractors. That is, they're small business owners. Doesn't matter if they rent tools. Construction guys often rent tools too, like heavy machinery when they need it. They can't buy it so they rent. They're small business owners, not big business. Still business though.

Small business owners don't have much clout, just like homeless people and the unemployed. They are individualistic, not united, and incapable of shutting anything down. Big corporations control vast swaths of the economy. They can shut down things with a single command. They also have enormous sway over the government. Subway drivers in New York have a lot of clout. They're organized, united, and capable of bringing the biggest city in the US to a halt. That's just how it goes.

If someone doesn't like driving a taxi, or if it proves to be an unprofitable business, they could always try getting another job. Or they could murder a passenger over fifty cents instead. Either way.

I'll bite. The situation in BKK was not analagous with the situation in Manila. In BKK, the driver was appropriately running his meter, and the customer was being an asshole (not saying he deserved what happened). In my case in Manila, several drivers in a row purposely attempted a scam. However I think your point is that at anytime someone other than yourself (the driver in the BKK case) could go off the rails and do something stupid.

That's one of my points. Business owners who rip off others for a living don't tend to be the most humanistic of people. It's not out of the realm of possibilities for something similar to happen in the Philippines for even less, especially if someone attempts to just walk away as you suggest. After all the murder rate per 100,000 people in Thailand is a relatively high 3. 24 while in the Philippines it's a whopping 11.32!

One of the many reasons I visit the Philippines less than any other country in Southeast Asia (except Brunei) even though I'm a short flight away is stuff like this. Some Bangkok taxis try it on, but you can always find a legit driver quickly. In a place like Manila they base their life around ripping people off. It's disheartening and disgusting.

Hell no. I wouldn't drink that burnt garbage if it was free. I have been to Doi Chang several times though. I pay the price listed on the menu like everyone else.
