Yanks will never understand the richness and diversity of the British insult lexis, and more importantly, how to use it. Plonker is mild (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=plonker). Now if he had called him a tosser?

WestCoast1 responded virtually immediately and also referred me on to RedKilt.

Both these guys promptly and repeatedly responded to my newbie questions and also volunteered info that I had not thought of.

RedKilt also gave me his Phils mobile with an open invitation to contact him for on-the-spot advice.

Everything else was about being nice and personable with the locals and taking a common sense approach.

Redman69 is right. It can be done, and by anyone willing to invest a bit of time (and, in my opinion, USD 20) to fast track the learning curve.

    First Time in Manila

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys.

In all honesty, I kept my prep very simple:

    1. Read the last 50 pages of the manila thread looking for tips / advice.

    2. Paid USD 20 to have access to PM and made a request on the manila thread for any senior members who were willing to help via PM on specific matters.

I, for one, will be returning to Phils as soon as I can get time off.

    Happy mongering.

    Bayleaf. Walk

    Skip:

Thanks. I actually went to the skydeck and was able to spot the direction I was supposed to get, but when on the ground could not go that way, ended up going to Roxas and walking down that way. I am back there in about 3 weeks. Plan to stay at Bayleaf again as it was a really nice hotel and reasonable. I plan to stay about a week so, that helps. I will try your route. I actually liked staying here. It is quite and nice.

    Thanks,

    CT

Del Pilar is about three blocks toward Manila Bay further than you needed to go. Go out the South side of the Bayleaf onto Victoria. Take Victoria straight toward the Bay until you get to General Luna. You'll know you're at Luna if you see the Philippine Red Cross on the far right corner. Turn left on General Luna and walk on the left side of the street. A short distance after you break under the old city wall you'll come to a triangle of the roads. Take the left side of the triangle, then proceed across Padre Burgos (named after the same martyr, but different street than BG district in Makati) in the same general direction you were going on General Luna. You are now on Maria Orosa. On your left within the first stretch is the Luneta Orchidarium, one of the best little parks in Metro Manila. If you're with a "cultured" woman, she'll be impressed by the orchids and the butterfly garden. There is an entrance fee. Average poor Filipinas may have no interest. Next you're walking across the open area of Rizal Park for about two blocks. Continue on Maria Orosa for about another three blocks once you enter into the city streets again. You'll run smack dab into the Padre Faura entrance of Robinson's.

Only reason to go all the way to del Pilar is if you're looking for MBC, Amazonia, Hussey's, Southern Cross, or some of the other bars there. If you walked form MBC to the Bayleaf in 20 minutes, you probably could have walked Bayleaf to Robinson's in 15 minutes by the route I just described.

I do have to admit it seems like you used this board the way it is meant to be a help.

Great report, lots of GFE info. And your FR is a way of giving back. Because others now know it can be done. Have a good life.

I concur with Fast Eddie's assessment. Good FR. Seems you took good field notes for this very authentic little ethnographic account.

The hotel did not misrepresent the taxi price. If you had gone one level further down from the terminal, there are small van taxis available. They are usually used by arriving balikbayan-type passengers with lots of gifts packed in cardboard boxes and who need to make room for family and friends waiting at the outside fence. Just like the yellow taxis at the first level, these guys have a set fare. Last thing I knew their fare to Ermita was 570 pesos.

The guy who grabbed your bags without asking was probably not a driver. The arrival areas at NAIA-and actually any place in Manila that has tourists to shuttle to and from taxis-have plenty of these touts. If you don't know to stop them, they grab your bags and carry or hold on to them until a taxi stops nearby, and then expect a tip. In other places you will have "helpful" strangers offering to get you a taxi, which in most cases would have stopped without any outside help. Then they want a tip. More than 60% of money exchanged in the Philippines is through the informal economy, so your tip does help the national economic multiplier effect. On the other hand, if you prefer not tipping someone to carry your bags a few feet, you need to expect these guys and stop them before they latch on. Newbies, you are forewarned.

    To Kingdee.

Nice report from a first timer you do your home work well before your first trip, good to see someone is that well prepare bring chocolate to the girl is something that I always do for the girl also.

    Fast Eddie 48
Thanks, mate. But I have to acknowledge that without the repeated tips / advice (including on the spot advice via php mobile) from two senior members via PM, would have made a lot of newbie mistakes.

I think it is marvelous. I've turned off all the water heaters in my house. Don't need them as I get scalding hot water out of the cold faucets anyway! Mind you, what I save in water heating, I am spending on air con.

Be the rainy season soon with high levels of humidity and torrential downpours everyday. That is a lot more discomforting than the present hot, dry weather.

I actually live in the Philippines because of the tropical weather. I love it.

My messages were (hopefully helpfully) directed as an advance warning to those overweight tourists / mongers with sweat stained T shirts and the rag / towel in hand staggering around and dripping sweat over everything and everybody.

AR has the best solution. Spend time in an air / con room with a lady of choice. It's a win win.

I am eagerly anticipating the ramp-up in temps in the next few weeks.

    Nice report for first timer
(Apologies for the long FR following, a composite of the notes typed on my laptop in between each pinay session while the memory was fresh).

Landed at T1 Ninoy Aquino airport on the Friday afternoon. Cleared immigration (needed to provide h / copy return ticket proof for free tourist entry visa) and collected bags in 30 minutes which was better than I expected. Got myself a globe prepaid SIM with the unlimited SMS (damage = 250 php) and also changed currency for peso at a good rate.

Very hot outside (was later told that it was 'summer') and went looking for the metered taxi rank which turned out to be about 50 metres from the arrivals area external exit.

Made the newbie mistake of allowing another driver at the rank (not the one whose taxi I eventually got into) to take my bag and help load it into the taxi (damage = 50 php). Had to specify my hotel was the best western hotel near the US embassy (in Ermita) as there is apparently another in Makita – I guess is pays to hop on the internet and get a feel for the area you're staying. Made sure the taxi meter was turned on and was at the hotel in 25 minutes (damage = 220 php including tip).

The hotel wanted to send me a car for 800 and also claimed that a metered taxi would cost me around 350. 500.

Checked in, showered and two hours later met the first of the pinays as arranged thru DIA and confirmed by text on the taxi ride in.

Pinay 1: DIA profile = Jane. 23, very attractive.

Prior YM webcam chat proved the photo matched the person. In all of our prior DIA / YM chats, no mention of a money exchange was though I understood it as a foregone conclusion if a meet at the hotel was agreed to.

    To Kingdee.

Nice report from a first timer you do your home work well before your first trip, good to see someone is that well prepare bring chocolate to the girl is something that I always do for the girl also.

More often than not the rain just raises the humidity and that in turn raises the heat index, which can be a real killer. Even at just 50% relative humidity a 36C / 97F degree day can make it feel like about 43C / 110F degrees.

Perhaps not so dangerous if your barhopping and they're air-conditioned, but I wouldn't spend too much time walking the streets or sightseeing without taking precautions; like maintaining proper fluid intake (water's good, but something like Gatorade is better as it has electrolytes).

Links to Wiki and NOAA charts on it:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_index

    http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/heat/index.shtml#heatindex

Let us not forget that many mongers visit from northern climates and aren't used to the heat and humidity. In my home state of Florida I see it all of the time;"yankees" burnt to a crisp and about to pass out from heat exhaustion are a common sight; especially during the summer. So don't underestimate the heat / humidity and take care.
