A walk through any American supermarket or Walmart reveals pretty much the same thing you observed in Greenbelt. Worst experience of all is in Costco or Sam's Club. They sell everything in large quantity. Customers think they just can't resist the great volumes of fattening food-because the price just can't be beat. There are very few slim people in Sam's Club.

I have a friend and her auntie left manila a while back to go live in US with a guy who was a tad overwight. He was 220 and she was the standard 90 pound lady.

3 months later I ask her how her auntie is. She says she now weighs 100. After 6 months she's up to 110. After a year she will have added another 10 pounds at least. Big portions, lots of fatty food, and supersize will happen every time.

Whilst in maybe 10-20% of the cases, the men had gone to pot (as in belly) , in maybe 80% of all cases the women had cetainly gone to pot. I'm sure they were lovely ladies, but they just appeared as dumpy, lumpy and chubby. And wearing flat shoes doesn't help.

I've spent some time in the slums and rural barangays by daylight-and occasionally at night-in recent years. Others may have had other experiences, but I see some sag in the older women there, and not so much weight gain. The same dietary deprivations that cause many Pinays to grow up short presumably cause them to keep the weight off during middle age. I wonder if, with the lifestyle change that occurs when a Pinay partners up with a Western man, that the woman's diet-especially the types and quantity of food-changes considerably. Nvslim's partner may be a charming exception, or she may simply have had parents that preached healthy diet and exercise. Good on you Slim.

I'm guessing that plays a big role. You can see it here in the inner city where all that is available is fast food. I was always amazed at how the semi-impoverished were always fat and then you look at whats available to them food wise and what their diets consist of and it makes sense.
