Gentlemen, the walls indeed do have ears, as well as eyes, understrand something about the Phils especially places like Butuan, but also Bislig, Surigao, Davao, Iligan and Cagayan, all which I've visited, lived in or mongered in. FROM THE VERY SECOND YOU ARRIVE AT THE TERMINAL/BUS STATION OR IN A PRIVATE CAR within the hour EVERYONE knows who you are, what country you are from, who you are here to see where you are staying, etc. etc. If you go out amongering, THEY WILL KNOW, understand that there ARE NO SECRETS in the Philippines, people in general LOVE to gossip, they have an incredible intelligence network that would make the CIA and the British MI 5 green with envy. First line of defense is the taxi driver, do you know how many of them are CDIG? (Civilian defense intelligence group)
or police informants? Then you got to understand the "relative" network, all her cousins, uncles, aunts, tenth cousins five times removed and their clan ALL KNOW ALL ABOUT YOU before you get there. Most of this is geared for people to make money, guide you to certain resuraunts/hotels, even "casa's"
the only thing you can do is give false info about your name, country of origin, who you are here to see, etc.,to throw them off the track. only lasts long enough until they can compare notes and figure it out, so why bother?

The suggest to go to CDO and party it up is a good one, very nice place with lots of little bars, a nice mall and you can get some western style food.

    Good luck

Butuan is a good hopping off point for the islands of Camiguin and Sarigao. You're also close to Cagayan de Oro, which is a pretty nice little college city.

We'll be looking forward to your followup reports.

i have been to butuan 4 times to meet chatmates and it really is not much of a mongering city. very small with few ammenities. i stayed at the emerald villa hotel which is in the city center and the only action i saw was from pimps close to the hotel and by the city park at night. there are only 2 good restraunts in town, weeboles and ailine cora out by the mall. and speaking of malls there is just one in town and thats nothing to write home about. they had a disco in butuan called big joes' but the last time i was there ( sept 2006) it was closed down. my advice would be to meet your sweetie and take the bus to cagayan de oro and spend time there where they have great malls ,lots of good restaunts and discos, and nicer hotels. also more non mongering activities like rafting, beaches, and action adventure park. i will be headed back to phil in late feb and already have my bag packed in anticipation. lol.

like anywhere in the phils, there is 'action', however, it may not be of the quantity or quality of other places more noted for carnal activities. there are several ktv's, including one run by a australian fellow i know (can't remember the name of it) but his wife works it (she is not a gro or anything but an assistant manager) it is close to the bus terminal. i dont want to say the guys name in public but if you really are interested pm me and i give you a few more details. from what this fellow told me (and what i have seen personally) most of the action is at these ktv's the girls usually freelance.
there is a big high rise hotel in town, big chinese symbol onthe side of it, (cant remember the name) but near the hotel are several small bars, mostly filipinos go in to them but if they see a foreigner the girls (gros) will bum rush you. this is also an overnight truck stop and lots of hookers in small cafe's catering to the truckers, i wouldn't tag any of them though, too used and too burnt out on shabu.

There is only 5 or 6 go-go/disco bars and about 3 freelance bars all within a few hundred feet, so not really much of a crawl even if you hit them all. (-; Seriously, you can pop your head in them all in about 10 minutes flat.

    Puerto Galera

    Brothers in the Pines,

I'll be making my first trip to Puerto Galera for some scuba training Feb. 18-25. Am interested in a recommendation for one or two good bars, not interested in a crawl, would prefer to head straight for quality, price not so terribly important. Also interested in anyplace that offers in-call, i.e. bj bars. Cheers.

Baguio is notorious for dog meat, which prepared right, can taste unbelievably good.
Comes to think of it, Lucky, come here boy!! um um good!

    Typhoon Durian

    Columpuss,

I have heard anecdotal reports that the Puerto Galera/Sabang area sustained property damage from Durian. I have not heard any rpts of fatalities in the area. It appears the fatalities were confined to the Bicol area, especially the villages on the slopes of Mayon Volcano.

Thought this was an interesting menu I saw walking the streets of Bagio one day. I was going to ask what breed but did'nt. LOL.

Does anyone know how's Puerto Galera or Sabang holding up against Durian. I don't have a drop of religion in me but I do pray for the good people of the philippines. The corrupt government + terrorists + poverty + typhoons, they still smile. The ironic thing is, praying to "him" is what most people in the PIs do all their lives and they still get this crap, thanks to "him" the great one.

From the brother mongers in this forum, our hats are off to you: the little boys selling baluts on Sabang, the old woman with the fruit basket, the many beautiful girls comming from the province to scratch out a living there, and also, forgive our petty complaints for we are not up to your standard.

Thanks for the post Boston, but could you please give more details? I'd love to hear more travel reports from outlying areas....as Spamhog has done.

How did you get to Daram? Why did you go? How long did you stay?

And, as a photo lover...what happened to your pics?

Columpuss, yea. That's good. I've seen a pig trike before and you are absolutely correct. Is that a Brit sense of humor I detect?

    Smart Cheats!

I have both Smart and Globe, and I have heard many Filipinos say this and I now know it's true, Smart CHEATS! If you buy a prepaid Smart card, pay close attention to your load, they cheat you out of it. Free texts disappear, etc. It's really true I have paid attention, they really do cheat you. For this reason, I recommend Globe. That and the coverage is better with Globe.
