day 9, friday march 7, 2014 – singapore day 1 (part two – brix bar):

Day 9, Friday March 7, 2014 – Singapore Day 1 (part one. The OT):

Perhaps one of the best kept secrets of the punting world is that Singapore is a great destination for women. It surprises people when I tell them this. The preconception is of Singapore as a bastion of capitalism and conservative economic principals, as a place with some of the harshest anti-drug laws in the world, and a city where you can be fined for spitting out a wad of chewing gum on the street. There are two great p4 p nightlife locations in Singapore. The first is Orchard Road where I was staying this trip and the second is Geylang where I always like to go. There are decent 3* bare bones hotels in Geylang. I stayed at the Fragrance Hotel – Crystal one time on Lorong 18 in the heart of the Geylang action for around $45/ night. It was clean, safe, and cheap.

It may only be 1 hour and 45 minutes flight time from Jakarta to Singapore, but the cultural differences between these two cities is light years apart. Changi Airport is probably the most modern, most efficient, and all around best airport in the world. It makes JFK or LAX look like banana republic airports. It took no more than 15 minutes total from the time I walked off the plane, got my passport stamped in immigration, picked up my suitcase in baggage claim, and walked out the front door to a waiting taxi. No lines, everything operating seamlessly the way it is designed to. The taxi dropped me off at the Holiday Inn Orchard City Centre less than 20 minutes later and I paid the 22 sgd ($17.5) fare with a credit card.

The thing about Singapore is that hotels are very expensive. Orchard Road Hotels are particularly expensive, but I like staying in this area because the nightlife here is really good. Sadly, it is hard to find a hotel room on Orchard Road for less than $180/ night. The Holiday Inn Orchard City Centre is one of more moderately priced hotels in this area and although it is not a 5* hotel it is probably the nicest Holiday Inn I have ever stayed at. (The Pattaya Holiday Inn is also pretty nice.) That is why I often stay at the Singapore Orchard City Centre Holiday Inn even when I am paying the tab.

But, since I am a member of the IHG (Intercontinental Hotels Group) Rewards Club, I had enough accumulated points to cover my 3 night layover in Singapore. Having a Chase Priority (IHG) Club credit card also entitled me to a free upgrade in rooms, but I declined the room upgrade because the one bedroom suite upgrade was on the highest floor directly beneath the roof top swimming pool and I discovered on a previous visit that the low hum from the pool pump motor was disturbing. So I asked the receptionist to just give me a deluxe room with a park view. Since I was declining the room upgrade, the receptionist kindly offered free breakfasts instead. Nice guy. My room was immaculate and fairly roomy. The view of the tropical park was great.

So after checking into my hotel, I took a little walk up and down Orchard Road and changed some money into Singapore Dollars. During the day Orchard Road is a high end shopper and tourist mecca. There is one high end designer mall after another. Not much for me to do here, but there is an abundance of great restaurants to choose from as well. I decided to splurge on my first lunch in Singapore and so I went to Straits Kitchen at the Grand Hyatt. Normally I am not that a big fan of 5 star hotel dining although there are a few exceptions. Straits Kitchen is one of them. For lunch the restaurant serves up a bountiful buffet of Indian, Malay, Singaporean, Chinese, and Japanese dishes. Each cuisine has its own station. The Indian and Singaporean stations are really good. Lunch is 45 sgd, but you can skip dinner after eating lunch here.

After lunch I hung out at the Holiday Inn swimming pool and then I relaxed in my room. I hadn't slept for very long the previous night so I must have dozed off a little because when I came to it was around 6 pm. I turned on the TV to hear the latest nothing info about the Malaysian Airplane disappearance and got ready for the evening's festivities. Finally 8 pm rolled around and I went out.

My first stop was Ipanama Bar at Orchard Tower (OT). Ipanema is the biggest and best FL bar in the OT. The OT is a mid-level high rise building right on Orchard road surrounded by all the fancy hotels and shopping malls. It is kind of like Nana Plaza in BKK only all the bars are inside the building on the first 4 floors and the OT bars are not Go Go's. On any given night there must be a couple hundred girls in Ipanema alone. Later in the evening, say around 11 pm, after all the normal tourists and shoppers have retired to the comfort of their 5 star hotel rooms, The FL's spill out of the OT onto Orchard Road. It is an amazing transformation!

BMD Bars = Buy me Drink Bars = only rub and spend your money.

For your info, OT has more than half a dozen Rub you bars, and a lot more of take-out only bars. Or a mix of rub also ok, take out also ok, type bars.

And if you consider the viets or Cambodians, standing out in the street as good stuff, well, you haven't seen good stuff, including possibly the biggest congregation of Viets, Thais, Fillys, add a sprinkling of a random other nationality like Indonesian, Afro. You will be spoilt for choice. Price, has been discussed many times, you can negotiate in the take out bars, with the girls.
