Japanese police are a whole other animal from the Korean Keystone Kops. When I lived in Japan, the last thing I wanted to happen was be arrested and hauled in to a Japanese police station. You don't raise your voice with them or give them any reason whatsoever to arrest you, or you'll find yourself in jail cell being held anywhere from 30-60 days without being allowed to contact counsel or embassy.

OTOH, I've seen people spit on, slap, kick, and hit Korean cops, and the cops DID NOTHING, just got in their car and drove off, allowing them to continue doing what they were doing to have the cop stop them in the first place. I can't comment on the Jap police having never been there, but I can tell you with the utmost assurance as I know several CID guys that all is video recorded if it happens on the street.

Most don't know that virtually on every street light is a video camera and the police are recording. If you are truly the victim, then the US Embassy will back you vs. The Korean police. The 6 attackers were allowed to leave immediately, my co-worker was arrested and spent the night in jail. (2) A former colleague had his head bashed in with a pipe (a premeditated and unprovoked act) , got staples in his head, nearly died, the whole bit. The police let the attacker go and kept my friend-still bleeding profusely-in the police station for 6 hours to answer questions while they debated whether or not to book him. THEN they took him to the hospital.

It was seen as clowny fun as an adolescent and he was let go, no booking. I just can't get over the idea that foreigners in Korea are seen as wimps that won't fight back. The Koreans are bigger than Japanese now (though still smaller than us) , have been told we did nothing to protect or develop their economy.

Coitus68 is absolutely right. In any kind of legal incident in Korea, the foreigner is automatically "at fault." I had a coworker that had his home broken into. He caught the guy and forcibly held him until the police arrived. When they came in, he said they instructed his wife to serve coffee to them and the crook, while questioning him about his methods to keep the crook around for them. He was warned that he could spend time in jail if the guy wanted to press charges for assault.

As badly as the Koreans treat all foreigners, I think we would all be smart to move out and let North Korea overrun these conceited bastards in the south.

Not to deviate from the P4P scene here, and digress back to local pick up, with negating the Korean male cock-block, but some practical advice would be appreciated. Recently, my local pickups have led to a steady rotation of GFE experiences, with minimal cash being dropped. He proceeds to blast his music via his MP3 loudspeaker, and talk loudly on the phone. I wait until he sleeps, and lean over to ask the girl to show me where we are located on my navigation map on iPhone. She moves over to sit beside me and we play 'challenge' games on my phone, and watch Korean videos on youtube. We exchange numbers, just as Korean male wakes up and stares up down, causing her to feel uncomfortable, and move back to her seat. He proceeds to call his friends and trash talk how the foreigner tried to pick up Korean girls on the bus. She feels more uncomfortable ('losing face') , and won't return back to seat beside me. We get off the bus, and I say goodbye to her with her telling me to call her later. The Korean male is observing the whole time, and follows her in the shopping mall, as I go catch a taxi. I double-back and watch him open a door for her, and start talking to her, just envisioning what cock-block statements pour out (e. G. Watch out for foreigners, he's a player, etc. Etc.). She doesn't respond to my texts (except Holiday greeting sent).

Example B:

Express Bus 2 hours outside of Seoul (different location). Sexy, young office worker wearing short skirt, and little too much makeup sits diagonally adjacent to me at back of bus. 1 minute left before empty bus leaves, older Korean fisherman gets on and sits directly across from her, and behind me. She accidentally drops something, so I ask if she is ok (in Korean). I proceed to give her a snack from my bag, to which stares ensue from fisherman, so I give him one too (which completely confuses him as he throws it on to the seat beside him not uttering a word). Later, I ask her if she enjoyed the snack, to which she smiles and offers me candies. Again, fisherman shoots look of death at us, so she offers one to him too. I start playing 'cute' games on my iPhone, she becomes interested, so I lean forward and I show her how to play. Fisherman hate stares resume, and she starts to feel uncomfortable. At this point, I should have told her to come sit behind with me, but fisherman would just turn around and continue his blocking. When we got off the bus, she said goodbye and smiled, and my sense was she wanted me to walk off with her. Lo and behold, fisherman immediately got up behind her, and escorted her to the bathroom. He even waited outside the bathroom to ensure that I wouldn't wait for her to finish! (Keep in mind: He had NO idea who she was).

Now the rationale behind posting this exchange (rather than the typical steamy play by play on here) is I would value advice on how to deflect the cock-block without directly confronting the Korean male (cultural taboo) and making the target 'lose face'. In bar, club, or even subway situations, I have this handled (move to another location) , but can't figure out to counteract this one.

What I would do in Korea was to play along, like a lampoon from Airport the movie. The Koreans don't have this kind of humor, but it can be followed if done silly. This will put the racist in his tracks and elevates you with the woman because you didn't go for the bait (anger). Incidentally, I may just have a canned line to anger him and move on, depending on the situation. Some Korean women have these men around so they can just enjoy the music or tend to their man-herd (something I'm not accosumted to in Asia). The woman can tease without worrying about male attention and the man can harass foreigners.

P. S. Jackson should be aware that there are professional Korean racist groups that infiltrate these kind of sites (think English Spectrum). They report them to the Korean authorities and have been known to glean information from such sites and make Nazi-esque documentaries, or failing that, commit cyber attacks, I kid you not.

It's true, I also have a Korean friend who spent 3 months in jail after being jumped by a guy in Hongdae because he was talking to his girlfriend. My friend broke the guy's arm when he wrestled him down. So the rule is 1. Never get in to fights in Korea 2. If someone wants to fight you, try to get away from there asap.

I appreciate the advice, but foreigners are becoming quite panzi here. Korean guys are mostly bark. If they give you trouble, just play with them, use sarcasm. They'll know you are screwing with them, but their culture doesn't really include vague mocking-facades. If one must fight just push him and hold him down until he submits.
