Sadly crackdowns aren't officially over! And many people think they are here to stay for at least the year or so.

People have been talking a lot on the adult Korean forums how the "golden age" of adult entertainment is on the decline with rising prices to play as well as continued crackdowns. The crackdown comes from a few things just as you mentioned above, but also a new presidency, as well as COVID being a good opportunity to crack down on these already struggling adult businesses.

The crackdowns might have lessened for sure but there was another last week.

They just happen to hit different cities and clear them and then move onto a new city.

But I do have to say that a lot of fresh foreign talent has disappeared. Just seems to be the same couple dozen girls over and over again.

I had read about the crackdowns in Wonju and Daegu. However, those crackdowns seemed to differ from the undercover operations that recently took place in Seoul.

If I understand the reports correctly, the issues taking place outside of Seoul seem entirely related to redevelopment. In Wonju and Daegu the government is going after entire neighborhoods much in the same way that Seoul already went after Cheongnyangri and Cheonho. I guess the prospect of being able to build out and sell entire neighborhoods is just too enticing for government cronies to ignore.

This might also explain why government is not closing down Anmas. Although Ga-in, Tiffanies, Superman-Gold and the like operate out in the open with only the thinnest veneer of plausible deniability (they are massage shops after all), they only take up a single plot of land and thus don't present the same opportunity to developers. It's only when Anmas don't pay taxes that they get busted.

The "golden age" may be over, but it will probably be replaced by something better. There will probably just be more and more online brokered services. Most people prefer the anonymity of online transactions and the ease of use of choosing a lady from a menu on a mobile phone.

Thankfully, online sex brokering will be almost impossible to stop. If the government thinks they can stop it, they're in for a game of whack-a-mole with new businesses replacing each one they take down.

I read that it was extremely hard for the police in Seoul to carry out their recent busts. Reports mentioned that when police tried to carry out crackdowns in the past, officers getting kickbacks routinely warned operators. Corrupt cops even provided operators with license plate numbers of unmarked police vehicles as well as phone numbers which were to be used in sting operations. Because of such corruption, the government created a task force allowed to work outside the bounds of precinct jurisdiction. It wasn't clear to me whether this was a temporary or permanent solution, but knowing Korea, it's likely not to last.

In other news, last month a Korean living in the Philippines was extradited for running an online gambling and sex brokering website. I hadn't heard of the site that was mentioned in the article, but it seemed to have been geared toward older clientele.

Do you know whether the police are doing undercover work in other parts of the country?

The crackdowns weren't meant to strike a blow to prostitution in general but to merely deter brothels that import talent from Thailand, China, Russia etc. In the end, the crackdown seems to have had almost no impact on the business.

The girls I see on the outside have all been in a panic, turns out most of the hits were based on intel from disgruntled Korean men. Had 2 of my usual deported but picked up 2 more. They also cracked down on the brokers the girls use.
