from my limited information, they are in effect "hostess bars", where the attractive female bartenders basically keep you company. I met a friend for drinks in one of these in my town. The bar was quite nice, the drinks quite expensive.

it's not pay for play, they cannot leave the premises. I do think it wouldn't be altogether difficult to procure a number though, but meeting her at mutually convenient hours could be difficult considering she'll be working most nights for the duration of the night and probably sleeping all day. it's cultural (Korean "culture" is bizarro by Western standards). Some of these things are changing, but broad vestiges remain.

I took the subway down to the Cheongnyangni zone for a first time stroll (line 1 east side of downtown). It was a pretty cold and windy night so my intention was not to really stay for long or do much more than kill an hour for a walk.

It must have been quite a place in its heyday. I'm guessing more than half of the "aquariums" looked out of service though I'm guessing 10pm is still pretty early for the area. The girls who were there largely ignored me and at least initially I was worried I was in for a repeat of another unplanned stop at the Pyongtaek zone with no one really willing to pollute their surroundings with a foreigner. Things were a bit different here.

I took an overall stroll to get a sense of the place and was accosted by a roving crowd of older women trying to get me to check out various rooms off of the furthest side street.
