Thanks for the info. I should have been more specific in my post. I meant to state unmarried people and not all the people in general. I should have been more clear. Anyway, data from 1995 (the most recent I could find for this) show the following for the demographic of over 15 year olds who are unmarried (I guess those 15 year olds would be 24 now):

Men 6,107,620
Women 4,454,047

If you want to get more specific, we should concentrate on the demographic that is more likely to be searching for a mate, the 20-39 group

Men 4,051,137
Women 2,536,098

If you go to age 44, it barely makes a difference with another 42,246 men and 28,522 women.

Hongdae these days is pretty much like Koreatown in LA or New York -- there are so many Korean Americans, white Americans, black Americans, and Koreans educated overseas (or Koreans who want to go overseas), that English is just as common as Korean. Bottom line there is, you've got lots of competition. Can you score there? Then you can score here?

Then again, it's easier to score than in the States, because lots of Korean women (and I emphasize this, because most guys on this board don't seem to realize this) find white (or black) Americans exotic, intriguing, and a little scary. Remember that Koreans are pretty racist -- they subconsciously react to everyone in terms of their preconceived notions of that person's culture, at least at first -- and while overall they seem pretty anti-American, they secretly admire all white people (including Americans, Canadians, Australians, Europeans, etc.) for various reasons. Also, it's safer and more exciting to have casual sex with a foreigner -- for the same reasons Korean girls are less likely to marry a foreigner. If you don't understand this statement, just trust me; it's too complex to explain. (Before anyone flames me, please remember that these are generalizations, that apply to varying degrees to different individuals, but overall outline cultural tendencies)

My suggestion to all you foreign mongers in Korea is to remember the three rules of picking up on Korean girls:

1) Learn a little Korean. You'll freak everyone out anytime you bust out in even decently accented Korean. And it impresses the women. Most Korean girls think of English like Americans think of French (ooh, ahh!).

2) Keep it light and playful. This applies, by the way, to women everywhere in the world, but doubly for Korean girls.

3) Be persistent. A strange facet of Korean culture (or at least Seoul culture) is that many girls think that it's better to play hard to get. Whether it really is or not is debatable, but that's how they feel. Most girls who will later enthusiastically sleep with you will first blow you off (and believe me, Koreans girls can be damn cold at first). So try at least twice. (The third try, however, I think is referred to as "sexual harassment.")

As for abortions, Korea is the abortion capital of the world. Think about it -- how many of you guys have been with a girl (freebie, girlfriend, or working girl) who didn't insist on a condom? Many. How many single (not divorced) Korean mothers do you know? None. Abortion is illegal in Korea -- but so is prostitution. Law enforcement is quite...flexible in Korea, you see. Korea has, according to the most quoted estimate, 2 million abortions a year. That's about as many as in the United States. 2 million out of 25 million women. Every year.

Sex related abortions were common for a long time, but a few years ago, they banned doctors from determining the sex of the baby (which reduced the practice, but again, this is Korea, so enforcement and compliance are spotty). It's also true that Koreans emphasize sons less, but they still prefer sons to daughters. The sex imbalance of earlier years is now trickling into clubs and bars. It's bad, but nowhere near as bad as one-child-per-couple China (and it's still pretty easy for a foreigner to get laid there).

Anyway, just remember, it's not too hard to get laid anywhere in Asia. Remember the three rules, grab your balls and squeeze hard every time you feel like chickening out (to make sure they're still there, that is), and go talk to that Korean cutie with the short skirt and the arrogant look.

I was in seoul two years ago, staying in Itaewon at Hamilton Hotel. Had a great time, including three excellent sessions ( One all night and two short time) with a girl called Gina that I found in one of the bars on the hill. Don't remember which one and I have lost her mobile number.

I've read about the abortion issue in Korea. I'm not Korean and I only travel there on business but nothing I've seen among my friends and coworkers would lead me to believe the problem is real yet. There also seems to be plenty of unmarried girls available from 22-33yrs old, and the go-between/semi-arranged marriage technique seems to get guys married by 30yrs old whether they want to or not. From the statistics I've seen, the sex ratio problem is supposed to start hitting about now with guys around 22-26 trying to find girlfriends 18-22. The problem doesn't get real bad for another 5-10yrs since selective abortion didn't take off until the 1980's, and the problem appears to be lessening now.

Now if you're 20-25, then yes you could have a problem. If you're 45 and trying to nail an 18yr old, then yes you could have a problem (but it sounds like fun). If you're 15yrs old, then the outlook is bleak. Of course if Reunification occurs, my prediction is that they'll be plenty of young girls in the North flooding to the South. Problem solved!

Korea has a birth rate of 15.12 births/1000 in population (2000), with a demographic ratio of 1.03 males/females (2000), and a Per Capita GDP of $17,800 USD (2003). The country also boast the world's 12th largest economy and the world's #1 raked primary education system with 100% literacy.

FYI, Per capita income in:
India is $2900 USD with 52% litereacy,
China is $5000 USD with 82% literacy,
Russia is $8900 USD with 98% literacy,
S. Korea $17,800 USD with 100% Literacy,
USA is $37,000 USD with 97% Literacy.

**There are essentially 9 women for every 10 men** in South Korea, so there is no shortage of women; just a shift in cultural identity and values. Men and their families are becoming less superficial and shallow; allowing their sons to marry down - well, maybe not, since most men are actually giving up some of their traditional values in order to hook up with a hot babe and good love for the weenee.

Speaking frankly with friends in Gangnum, an exclusive disctrict in Seoul, education can be bought and manners can be taught, but physical beauty cannot, so the upper class is trying to infuse a dose of good looks into its family lines, so that their daughter don't opt for cosmetic surgery (Noise, Eyes, and Jaws).

The reason so many recent Korean men are marrying out of their status has to do with the male to female ratio in the country. Korea, like a lot of other Asian countries, prizes sons. In the 70's and 80's it was quite common for a lot of people to abort daughters. It's kind of sick, but some people would have constant abortions until they have a son. Well, that's starting to come to roost now. The country has something like a 6/4 male to female ratio. That means 33% of the male population won't be able to find a mate. It also means that females can be pickier about their mates. All that basically translates to is that there is a shortage of women in the country. A lot of the farm boys have taken to travelling to Yanji (Yongil) in China to find wives since all the come of age girls have left the farms for the bright lights of the cities.

I'm Korean and I love Korea, but it's getting almost ridiculous over there. I kind of outgrew the 588 scene a few years ago. The 20-30 minute bang bang thing just doesn't cut it for me anymore like when I was younger. RS in Korea is like a mindfield. Half the time you don't know if you're getting ripped off or not and so many of them are gang related that you could easily get beat up if you complain about anything. Thought I would post a quick report on my Seoul adventures.

Didn't do enough research before I went so more fool me. But I was more than happy with Friends, which I found out about on here.
