I think there are more hotels like this all over town, and one just has to know or find out in advance where they are. One of my San Jose tw ra friends from 3 years ago did not know about it (and we ended up spending $100/ night at a 4 star luxury hotel room that time), so it is not quite common knowledge to local residents. I read online that a 2010 article claims that Taipei short term hotels are a thing of the past, but this is obviously wrong by my own personal counterexample.

There is no downtown in Taipei. You are in the more affluent part of it based on the bar location. You can stay short time in most local hotels. If you don't like the girl, send her back next time.
