I cannot read and write Thai but I can speak enough to get by in social situations. If I don't get a good response after trying to chat with them on line, I call them up.

If you can already speak Thai reasonably well, learning to read and write is not such a huge project. You should consider taking it on. It does benefit messaging with Thai girls.

You can learn to read Thai without a teacher. I learned initially by a book. I happened to use the AUA book on reading and writing many years ago (25 years possibly), however I am sure there are good texts still available. Thai does have an alphabet, and where English spells 50% of words strangely, in Thai 90% have regular spellings, meaning I can spell 90% correctly by guessing, without actually knowing the spelling for certain. Thais misspell words too. The hardest part of spelling in Thai is probably just remembering which tone a word is.

The tone marks and rules are slightly tricky, but get used to it with repetition. Issan is worse for tone rules so thankfully there is no official written language for Issan.

You can get your reading going pretty well in just 6 months if you put in a bit of effort.

I have typed so many messages in Thai now, that I know where the all the basic letters are on the keyboard even, not having to hunt for them anymore. Smartphones assist with the spelling by guessing the word you are typing, and giving a few options (as long as get the initial letters right).

I have many thousand word Vocab lists Thai to English and visa Versa that can be plugged into a Flashcards App to learn. This can also practice reading by using the Thai script.

Reading the names of places that are in Thai only is a bit handy, also reading the menu in places where there is no English menu.

If you are here for the long term, reading Thai is a worthwhile project. Just so happens my GF does not speak English so all our messages have to be in Thai script.

In early days you can read a girls message in Thai and answer in English if girl can read English reasonably, since typing Thai starts so very slow. When you read a girl's message in English, it is not always clear what they mean, since grammar is poor, or use a word incorrectly. Thai is usually clearer.

I don't actually write Thai that often or that well. I type in Thai though and use standard Khetmanee keyboard in all situations to avoid getting confused.

My most confusing girls are Laos girls who don't speak English but type Laos variations of Thai words in Thai script (so spelling altered from normal Thai way). For example "chorn" meaning spoon becomes "sorn" in Laos style. Chiangmai girls could well spell a few words a bit strangely and use Chiangmai words like "jao" meaning you.

A highly educated person knowing more than one language should be able to learn to read Thai even quicker I would guess.

I can also speak some Thai to get by in social situations, but not good enough to hold a fluent in-depth conversation with a Thai person. Which goes back to what I was saying, a foreigner would either have to read, type or speak fluent Thai in order to break into the sideline world. And my guess is; the majority of us are not up to those levels in Thai fluency, including me. This means that unless a sideline girl is able to understand a little English mixed in with Thai or be able to grasp what a foreigner is saying in bad Thai, then conversing with these girls is going to be extremely difficult.

Open you mind and give it a try. I've had some success. You have nothing to lose. The idea is to flirt with them a little.
