According to this report, 20 tourists have signed up to visit Thailand in July:

It also says opening is July 9th, not 1st. A lot of it is probably due to uncertainty / chances their reopening will get delayed.

I think in this case the supply must precede the demand.

No one will go (or stay) to Phuket if everything is closed.

On the other hand, Phuket can become a very popular spot if it is the most lively place in Thailand.

I think everything will be opened in Phuket by Jul 1. But pay 4 play will probably not be firing on all cylinders. So it'll be enough to attract the normal (non p4 p) tourists and their families. But probably not enough for the p4 p tourists.

I read an article this morning which stated that you still had to have a visa and a COE from the Thai embassy of the country you are traveling from. That is the show stopper. Until they go back to just stamping your passport when you have the vaccine certificate and the negative test very few people are going to come. The article I read could be incorrect but we won't know for sure until sometime around July 1st. Who's going to make plans when the rules are always changing?

For sure. With so much changing in Thailand, it's hard to assume that reopening really means that. Their 3rd wave hasn't been decreasing at all. They could (I doubt they will) change their travel and quarantine policies at any time. That along with the rainy season in full force from July-Oct, I doubt tourism will pick up right away. But I think it's also more about testing the no-quarantine policy and make sure it's ok to open up other provinces in Oct and Jan.

Most likely, Phuket will be fully open by July 1st. Only restriction may be that the business needs to be 70% vaccinated before opening?

So far, Phuket's 58% vaccinated. As for the bars and massage shops, time will tell, but it's probably a waiting game on both ends. Mongers waiting to see what hobbying is going to be like, keeping a close eye on FRs. Shop girls are also probably going to call their friends to see what tourist traffic is like. July isn't really a busy season for tourism. 1 night 1 dollar campaign might help, but who wants to go in muggy / rainy July-Sept? I'd venture to guess that tourism will start ramping up and pick up towards Sept-Oct.

The main purpose of the sandbox is to confirm opening to vaccinated tourists will work. So tourism will probably really start picking up in end of Oct-Nov as other parts of Thailand also start opening up.

Going to pay close attention to what's going to happen in Phuket for the next 2 months before I make plans to travel to Thailand and stay for 2 months.

The big question is whether it's worth it for the vaccinated to visit Phuket now. The governor has allowed massage shops to open as of June 1.

My guess is businesses will be allowed to open if employees are vaccinated. Most business owners will be slow to restart operations due to lack of customers, employees, and money. Business owners won't reopen if they expect additional COVID restrictions in the near future. Girls are now back home in Isaan or wherever, many will return after tourism grows. Many businesses will never reopen under prior ownership. It will be a long process before Phuket is fun again. Months? Years?

Chicken and egg thing. Businesses need tourists and tourists need businesses.

There are new reports that the Prime Minister has confirmed that Phuket will be opened to vaccinated tourists from July 1, you have to stay there at least one week before you are allowed to leave for other parts of Thailand.

They're using sinovac which is pretty useless for jabs, 50% efficacy. May as well not bother.

Useless? That certainly isn't true. Clearly you haven't gone through the math of how a virus propagates. If everyone gets that vaccine, it might even be sufficient to drop the "R" value below 1. It also reduces the COVID symptoms.

That said, it certainly isn't in the league of Pfizer or Moderna.

Moderna painfully slow in getting approved but the much bigger question is where are they currently going to get Moderna vaccines? Even some the G8 countries are currently having issues getting Moderna supply.
