Best Beach in Phuket area is Laem Singh Beach, north of Patong. OK snorkeling, plenty of food and beverage options, secluded, nice clean sand. Was there in January. Best day trip for scenery and snorkeling is Phi Phi Islands Sunrise Tour by Simba, Maya Beach is spectacular in the morning with few boats and tourists. 5 or 6 stops, never felt rushed, great guides, new boats and good food. Similan Islands offer the nicest white sand beaches and much better snorkeling but you'll be heard around like cattle with the Russian tourists. Surin Island day trips are similar.

I'm going back in February for more scuba diving. Booked a couple of Patong escorts, will report after. Cheers.

I agree that James Bond Island is a tourist trap. However I recommend a trip on Phang Nga bay were James Bond Island is one of many karstcliffs. It is really a spectacular day out.

But in my opinion is the best way to do the trip is on your own, not on group tour.

Go to Ao Po pier and rent a long tail in suitable size, we paid 4000 bht two years ago and we could easily been 6 people.

This way you can tell the driver what you want to do during the day and you are not in the hands of the tour guide.

Bring beer and girls and have a nice day out.

Or go to Bang Rong pier and take speedboat to Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi, rent scooter there and see the Island. Not been to Yai but I guess there is scooters for rent close to pier there also.

So I just spent 2 weeks in Patong and have to say I am very much impressed. After 5 previous trips to Pattaya I was very keen to see how Phuket compares and can confirm that Patong is in many ways similar, but in many other ways totally different.

The biggest pro I found for Phuket is the beaches. They are freakin awesome. Even Patong Beach, although very busy some days, beats the shit out of what they try to pass off as a beach in Pattaya. I made it to Freedom Beach (google for pictures) (Haha I walked there too which some suggest is not possible) and have to say that it is simply paradise. Very quiet with people, beautiful white sand and clear turquoise water. Simply a dream come through. You can get there by long boat if you don't want to hike over a big hill and through a forest. I didn't make it out to Phi Phi Island (from the movie The Beach) or James Bond Island, but hope to do so next time.

The biggest con I found with Patong is that it appears on the face of it to be a lot more expensive and the quality of the women is not quite as good (more on that later). Like anywhere they will take all of your money if you give it to them. I would suggest that everything is negotiable and if you want to save money, work on your haggling skills.

Jame Bond Island is a waste of time. It is too tiny and no practical value. Just a rock and cave in the ocean with a tiny amount of sand. Skip the James Bond Island tour. Takes a long day to see mostly Mangroves. Phi Phi Island is far more worthwhile, Maya bay lovely, and some other Islands in that vicinity. It is worth statying on Phi Phi Island at least over night and maybe longer. I booked a girl for several days and took her with me. LOL You can stay just a little way up the mountain (to avoid Tsunamis), but get a room not too far up due to tiring walk to and fro from restaurants etc.

I don't go to Patong primarily for mongering, it should be secondary. In fact I don't go to Patong at all any more, for nature as there are better destinations like Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Lipe and Adang, Koh Tao, etc. The better the location for nature, conversely the worse for mongering usually. Patong maybe a good compromise. Patong got just a bit too busy for me, but I understand others are well hooked on it.

Great report Jack! Spot on and very much what I also noticed when I visited Phuket a month ago (for the first time). I was there with a beauty from Bangkok so I could not partake in the hobby as I would normally have done. I would add that there is an awesome place for live classic rock by the end of walking street, called Rock City. Really good quality musicians. At least better than those belting out the chords in Pattaya. Just a great place if you are into rock. Best looking girls in go-go was found in Suzy Wong 1. Really good quality in fact. Also it is apparant that there are a lot more non Thai hawkers looking to sell suits, timeshares, tuk tuks or whatever else in Patong. I know that some people get very pissed off being hassled all day by Hawkers, but I find the best policy is to smile and say no thank you and remember that you are on holiday banging cute little honeys, and not let them bother you.

Walking around Patong is that little bit more pleasant than walking around Pattaya. Okay they seem to have the same open sewer system as Pattaya but the dirty stink that is so common in Pattaya is not near as prevalent.

Missing too are all the old men sitting in the bars all day in their shorts and Chang tank tops. Whereas Pattaya is touristy with older mongers and Asians, Phuket seems to have a much younger crowd with a lot of Russian and Australian couples, in addition to the Asians and groups who are there to holiday. There just seems to be a lot less mongers standing out in Patong as would be evident in Pattaya, and I think I am a lot more comfortable being able to tell people back home that I am going on holiday to Phuket as opposed to admitting that I am going to Pattaya.

The mongering scene in Phuket seems to be a more condensed scaled down version of Pattaya. The main area is Bangla road which is closed off to traffic at night. Here you will find a version of Pattaya's Walking Street with bars, freelancers on the street, massage parlors, and gogo bars. I am sure that there are some out of the way, harder to get to, premises of note to be found in Patong, and I did walk around a fair bit, but the main action appears to be around Bangla Road and along the beach road.

Firstly the bars:

Not much to say about them other than I wasn't overly impressed. The quality of the women available was average to say the least and they are much more forward (not quite aggressive but getting close) about approaching and asking for lady drinks. Most of the bars are doing a special during the day and you shouldn't be paying much more than 80 baht per beer. At 220 baht a ladydrink though, I wasn't spending much time hanging around.

The gogo bars:

Similarly I wasn't overly impressed with the gogo bars. Fair enough some of the girls in Suzy Wongs were gorgeous, but the quality in the others was like the bars average at best. One thing that pissed me off about the gogo bars was that they do not operate a tab (bin) service. That means you order a drink, they deliver it and you pay there and then. I was in Harem and bought a beer for 180 baht, but because I had no change I paid with a 1000 note. I waited for about 15 minutes for the girl to come back with my change and then challenged another serving girl to go and find her. Another 5 minutes passed and the original serving girl returned with my change apologising that she forgot. I can only imagine the p**s that is taken when the customer is blind drunk. I was ready to wreck shop!

The cost of lady drinks in most of the clubs is around 250 baht and where I asked I was told that the bar fine was 1000. I did have one little cutie on my knee in Exotica, me drinking a Chang for 99 baht after having bought her a ladydrink for 200 baht. She had lovely little titties that I was enjoying playing with. She didn't have any English so her friend assisted in communicating. She was looking for 4,000 baht for short time. I don't think I ever laughed so hard, and I think she realised very quickly that the ladydrink was as much as she was going to get out of me and I was going to continue playing with them lovely little titties for as long as I could to get my money's worth.

The massage parlors:

The massage parlors in Patong were pretty good. The girls working them came in all shapes and sizes but with a bit of work some beauties can be found. A one hour oil massage will cost about 250-300 baht and seems to be negotiable with some girls offering discounts, and in each case I took a massage in Patong, specials were always available. This compares positively to Pattaya where I have in the past turned over with big smile on my face and a raging hard on only to be told Sorry, no special. The Fuck?

It seems that some girls do handjobs only, some do blowjobs, some do full sex and some do it all. I would suggest if in doubt ask before she starts. I had girls on the street begging me to come in telling me what they would do and for how much. Some premises indeed are better equipped than others with small little wooden compartments instead of the dividing curtain. Another thing that struck me was the girls were a lot more serious about safe sex and that anything more than a handjob resulted in a condom being produced and put on immediately. This compares in my experience to Pattaya where you get a wishy washy demand for a condom, but if you tell her you don't like or don't want she says okay.

The prices for specials in the massage parlors were different from girl to girl and I found that they initially quoted high prices but could be talked down a lot. I was paying around 500 for handjobs, 750 ish for blowjobs and around 1000 for full sex.

Freelancers on the Street:

I did get talking to a couple of freelancers at the beach end of Bangla Road. Similarly they are of average looks and some are older and some are heavier. Although I didn't partake I got quotes of 2,000 for long time and 1,000 for short time. I am sure that those prices could be further negotiated downwards if necessary but as I wasn't interested I wasn't going to waste anyone's time.

Nightclubs:

This is where Patong really really shone for me!! I freaking loved Illuzion and Seduction and did well consistently out of both places. In fact just thinking about it, every one of the girls I decided I wanted I got. As nightclubs on their own they really impressed me. The music was pumping and the light shows were amazing. Around midnight the places started to fill with girls who were obviously coming from the bars, gogo bars and massage parlors, and other girls who obviously just work the nightclubs. Some of the women were gorgeous, and I think these clubs worked better for me because there was more of a girlfriend experience feel to it. Everywhere else in Patong there just seems to be an emphasis on short time and it has a Wham bam thank you mam, now give me my money!! Feel to it, but with the nightclubs it was a totally different vibe.

I could check out the talent, choose what really worked for me, make an approach and then spend the evening enjoying dancing, the music, lights, atmosphere and the whole experience knowing I was bringing her back to mine later to fuck her silly. None of the girls I pulled discussed money in advance. I paid each 2,000 baht for overnight and they seemed delighted and came back for more. Loved it!

Overall I had a great 2 weeks and am now thinking that Pattaya will be my destination of choice for the summer while Patong will be my happy place in the winter!
