I am a soapy guy and have been hitting various soapies in BKK. So apparently the only soapy available in Patong is Christin Massage. We didn't really have time to venture into Phuket Town where I heard there were more soapies. We went late afternoon and the selection was horrendous. I will try to make it short in trying to have you grasping the essentials.
1- This is Asia. Asian people are able to experience and manage paradoxes and contradictions in a way that westerners can hardly understand. So Thai girls can behave in a very calculated and opportunistic way with a man, and yet at the same time be honestly taking care of him, feeling friendly (or even loving sometimes).
2- In such poor Asian countries, men are perceived in a very utilitarian way by girls, i.e. get married or have a boyfriend taking care of them, or being paid by the act. For them going with men for fun only is behaving in a foolish way. Sometimes they go with men for fun only, but never for a long period. A freebie in Thailand is a girl making a strategic investment.....
3- You can meet girls in shops, massage, etc... who give you the impression that you can pick-up any girl in Thailand. What you don't know is that these girls probably go regularly to Tiger, etc...to sell their body (if they are pretty enough for that). I guess it's all subjective. I almost never pay more than 200 baht for HJ. For BJ, I have paid 300 baht quite a few times (inlcluding one time from a girl who was a 9/10). It all comes down to if the girl likes you, so just try and be warm and funny. It's amazing how well making them laugh can work. There was also one time in kata (2 years ago) where I actually got FS for only 300 baht extra. But that's pretty rare, as stew points out. I guess it's all luck. But no harm in starting low and seeing how it goes.

So any further reports you have on the kata scene would be much appreciated. Your oil massage sounded good.- my only tip is that you shouod be able to get it a fair bit cheaper than that. For eg, pay 300 baht for the actual oil massage, and 200 baht for HJ. If good BJ, about 300 baht. 400 baht tops.
I'm always unsure as to what is a fair price for BBBJ in the massage places in southern Phuket, Kata / Rawai (where massage shops are the most obvious choice for company), but 400 baht seems low? Don't you mean HJ?
