The average new infection rate on the island is about one per 140 k head per day; less than 20 new cases per week. In Ireland, it's 1 in 14 k per day. They have also set up checkpoints on the bridge and are only allowing those with proof of vax or recent PCR test, and they must also have the phone app. That last bit makes it riskier for cops to take tea money to allow people past the checkpoint. Factor in that I have been vaxxed. The CDC is showing an infection rate of 100 cases per million (1 in 10 K cases), although I don't think that the Delta variant will improve on this figure when it starts to take a serious hold in the US.

Thailand is definitely a high risk country, though it's currently only at 25% of the UK rate. I am planning four weeks. But statistically in Phuket, in that time, I would have to have close contact with 2500 people a day based on current figures to have a 50% chance of meeting an infected person, and that does not mean I will become infected. And then, I would have to be one of those 1 in 10 k cases where the vax failed. Right now, I'd say that as long as the local gov continue what they are doing, and people stick to the rules, Phuket is one of the safest places on the planet to be right now.

Day 4.

But, like everyone else, Phuket which appears to have a high uptake of vaxxes, is like the rest of the world, in a race to achieve herd immunity before new variants can take hold.

Did you ever get confirmation that there is no rule against tourists and locals sharing a hotel room?

I was told by the hotel that for the first night, no joiner would be allowed in my room (because the first night until the results of the day one test is available is considered to be quarantine). I draw the conclusion that from the second night, an unmarried local guest will be allowed. But for myself I decided against travelling to Phuket in July and I am still looking for alternatives (SDQ, POP, MBA, ZNZ, DSS, BJL. But flight prices are ridiculously expensive these days).
