Woman lied to boyfriend over visit to fiancé

A Thai woman was already living with her new Canadian boyfriend in Bangkok when she visited her former fiancé in Los Angeles in December 2007, a B. C. Supreme Court trial in Victoria heard Tuesday.

Tensions were running high at David Goldberg's attempted murder trial as defence lawyer Ray Dieno began his cross-examination of Goldberg's exfiancée, Tatcha Aroonjaratsang.

Goldberg, a former Boeing engineer, is charged with the attempted murder of Aroonjaratsang and her husband, Jeremy Walsh, in Saanich on the night of Sept. 24, 2008. Goldberg is also charged with possessing explosive materials.

"You played Mr. Goldberg like a dupe," Dieno said, raising his voice."You took his money."

When prosecutor Nils Jensen objected to Dieno's treatment of the witness, Justice Geoffrey Gaul told Dieno that the loud voice was not necessary.

"You met Jeremy in November and you played Mr. Goldberg like a dupe," the defence lawyer continued.

Aroonjaratsang, a petite woman with long, dark hair, shook her head.

"No, I didn't do anything to him. I planned to have a good relationship with him and he showed me living with him wasn't good for me."

The court has heard that Aroonjaratsang and Goldberg met online in July 2007 and became engaged on Sept. 22, 2007, in a traditional ceremony in Thailand. Following Thai custom, Goldberg gave Aroonjaratsang's mother $27, 000 in gold bars as an engagement present.

Dieno suggested Aroonjaratsang was looking for a relationship to escape Thailand. He accused her of breaching her betrothal to Goldberg and continuing to take his money after she met Walsh in November.

"Yes, I took some. But not the big one," she replied.

In December 2007, Goldberg paid for her plane ticket to Los Angeles where she stayed at his apartment, went skiing and travelled to Hearst Castle. Goldberg also bought her a cat, said Dieno.

"And, all the while, Jeremy was back in Thailand waiting for you," Dieno said, throwing papers onto the defence desk.

At this point, Gaul interrupted the proceedings and told Dieno to refrain from throwing papers.

Aroonjaratsang testified she did not tell Walsh she was visiting Goldberg.

"We were really close. We were living together. I told him I was going to the USA to visit my mother's friend."

"You lied to Jeremy," said Dieno.

"Yes I did," she said.

Aroonjaratsang explained that she had told Goldberg she was seeing someone else, but he would not release her from the engagement.

"He insisted he wanted to see me in the States to make the decision. He wanted to make sure it was what I really wanted."

After visiting Goldberg, Aroonjaratsang broke off the engagement. She married Walsh in the spring of 2008.

As Dieno questioned Aroonjaratsang about a series of emails between her and Goldberg, the accused did not look up. He sat in the prisoner's box taking notes on a laptop computer.

Yeah, would be extremely helpful. On the following link you will find a lot of cover girls from a Thai-German magazin (NOT connected to any form of prostitution!). While many of the girls are definitely Isaan and some of them are of mixed German Thai heritage, there must be one or two Phitsanulok girls included.

The girl on cover of 11/2009 come closest to the ones I know from Phitsanulok but is not exactly that type (too much cheekbones).

They are also in my experience the most difficult, and Central Thais in general tend to be much more arrogant and mercenary than other Thais,. (but has the straight nose, full lips, oval face and athletic build that hallmarks Central Thai beauties).

I have been to Burma and Thailand, have some Vietnamese and Japanese friends but normally I am not even able to distinguish japanese from chinese people. But these Phitsanulok experience really made me think. So a question to the real experts: Is there a special population in Central Thailand/Phitsanulok that differs from the rest of the country. Or was it simply coincedence? I know personal tastes differ a lot and I am not expecting everybody to concur but please tell me about your personal experience concerning the different "tribes" of Thailand.

You are talking about hilly Central Thailand. While many people of other ethnic groups have migrated there (especially Isaan Laos to do the work) that area is the home of people who mostly consider themselves ethnic Thai (true ethnic origin of these people open to probably unresolvable dispute). On the hand, (also obviously just my opinion) I find the Khmer women to be the sexiest, most passionate and most honest. When actual Khmer native speakers their accents in English are much easier to comprehend than Thai or Lao speakers' accents (more clipped than sing-song, Khmer being a non-tonal language). They also face more prejudice than members of all but a few other ethnic groups, and the women, even those whom Westerners find incredibly alluring, are not considered pretty by the urban white Thai-dominated media; Khmer girls tend to have low self-esteem owing to their dark skin and often squarish faces. The Khmer are also thought to be in possession of strong black magic- when I left my long-time Central Thai girlfriend for a wonderful Khmer woman, I was informed by the former in all seriousness that I had been placed under a black magic spell; "You don't know those people, they are black!" She wasn't necessarily referring to skin tone, in fact like most Central Thais she is about as dark as any Khmer (but has the straight nose, full lips, oval face and athletic build that hallmarks Central Thai beauties). It may well be true, although I think a people possessing such magical powers would probably be using it for more practical purposes, rather than generally living in squalor. I am generalizing broadly here, of course, and am curious as to what others have found.

I have often heard of the differences in thai population when it comes to looks. The Lao girls from Isaan are supposed to be different to the ones from the south to the Khmer influenced and so on and that many conaisseurs have told incredible stories about the women from Chiang Mai.

While normally I am totally happy with the so called Isaan looks (dark skin, tiny) I have to admit that the most beautiful girl I have ever met (not only in terms of asian women, met her 3 years ago) came from Phitsanulok in Central Thailand.
