Posts: 182If your reply on my statement is only some massage places and dating sites then you really don't understand what I mean.
Pride can be also put away as arrogance.

Hanoi people have character and lots of pride in their heritage. They are not easily impressed by crude foreigners with a few bucks in their pockets.
If you think white guys with a few bucks should be treated like kings, you would be making friends only with the stupidest trash of the world.

Posts: 182I am not talking about massage places, I mean just in general, talking to girls on the streets, tourists are not seen here as guys with a golden dick. They are not really interested in you despite you are loaded with cash. There are other countries in the world with the same poverty but where you as a white guy be treated as a king. They really are not interested. And I don't make a comparison with Thailand because also there the golden years are over.

Posts: 6523It depends on where you went. Where did you go and what kinds of people you meet? May be you were wearing a flight suit, looking like a be-52 pilot who dropped 1,000 dumb bombs.
On Hanoi during the war.
Hanoi is way too densely populated, difficult to scratch out a living for almost everyone. Life is very hard and people very competitive. Thousands after thousands high-rent store fronts sell the same goods or food with very few buyers. Tens thousands motor bikes, buses, vans, cars rush around on narrow colonial streets, every one trying to seize every inch of the road in front of them regardless of traffic signals or potential accidents. Working people are so stressed and sullied, they don't greet each other even among families, close friends ect.
Went to Neko, one of the top massages in Hanoi near US Embassy. Workers looked depressed, not doing much business. Took a hot girl into the room, got naked while she was filling the tub. When I found out she was not going to screw, I put my clothes back on and bailed. Was expecting a fist fight or at least a nasty confrontation with the 5 reception and security guys, but they were cool, did not get upset or demand payment.
Couple times I took long bus rides from Old Town to Cau Giay district to screw GAITO. ORG girls. People on the roads were neutral, not hostile but not friendly or helpful. Buses are cool since they move as fast as any cars or bikes on narrow, congested streets with drivers blowing their loud horns at encroaching traffic every 2 minutes. I took long bike rides and Grab cars to various red light districts. Drivers were cordial, some even chatty, offering to steer me to good spots where locals go.
Northern girls had more flexible and less aggressive attitudes when dealing with conflicts. Like when I turned them down for not looking like posted pics, they would back down and negotiate for lower rates. One was wailing in disappointment after I turned her down. Southern girls would likely swear obcenities and and try to attack me.
Over all I would rate Hanoi people generally gentle, fun, warm. Saigon is far worse, where people are ruder, more ruthless and offensive, shouting loud obscenities among themselves and with tourists, fighting on the streets. Every time I go out, walking or riding, I actually have to be prepared to fight aggressive, rude, nasty people.
Lacking infrastructure and unique cultural offerings, Vietnam is not a good tourist spot, besides lots of hot girls cheap. Vietnam should manage its prostitution better to bring in tourists and employment to hot girls, raising GDP.

Posts: 182I got the impression people don't like tourists that much, they hardly greet when you do first.
They turn away, are not friendly.

If you wanted a happy ending a $5 or maybe a $10 tip in US cash dollars was all you needed. Anyone know what it is today?

Hello everybody! I was wondering if anybody has ever encountered a barbershop which offers massage and a he and other, extra services in Hanoi? Saw some videos on YouTube and was wondering if the concept is real. If yes, where are such shops found? Anything to report?
