"xe" means vehicle. "om" means "cuddle". So "xe om" is when you travel on the back of a motorbike with someone (sometimes also "honda om").

"bia" means "beer". Hence "bia om". Also "cafe om", "karaoke om" etc. With a little imagination you can even create your own Vietnamese!

"bia om" is, to me, one of the most pointless ways to spend an evening. And expensive if you're footing the bill. Best to let your Vietnamese friends take you. Easy to get ripped off if you go yourself or "you take them".

Basically a group of blokes go to a place and get shown to a private room. Its a VN male bonding thing. Girls are brought in and each guy takes a girl. You then spend the evening drinking and snacking. They'll bring in a crate of beer which will opened by the girls who then guzzle down as much as possible. Not to mention knock half of it over the floor. The beer itself is not unreasonably priced. Even the room is usually OK pricewise. But the sheer quantity that gets sloshed around can make it expensive. Its pretty standard to pop the girls boobs out or pull her knickers down for a laugh. But that's as far as it usually goes. Anything more and you take her to the hotel. If just a couple of guys go then a hand job is possible. All a bit hit and miss.

Not much privacy either. I've known "waiters", "mamasans" etc to burst in and help themselves to your beer. Insisting on chinking bottles.

All rather pathetic in my opinion. Karaoke without the karaoke machine. Though often they have that too.

You tip the girl when leaving. They typically get the tip and a tiny commission on drinks. They either pay to work at the bia om, or have to meet a target for drink sales. Obviously they get more if you take them out. Met a software engineer at a bia om once. Fluent English (unusual). Just did it in the evenings for extra money. Nice girl, but exceptional.

In general don't expect anyone to speak English. Though in a parade of a half-a-dozen girls there's usually one that can manage a few words. But she might not be the prettiest.

Bia oms are usually at least a couple of miles from the centre and not really designed for foreigners.

I remember when I lived in a smaller city in the south seeing such a place close to where I lived. There were about 6 or 7 good looking women hanging round the place, but there were very few customers. One evening I went in to see what was happening. There were two men lying back in barbers chairs, with a bunch of women for each, talking and laughing. No hair dressing implements.

I could not speak any Vietnamese, and they could not speak any English, so I could not carry it further. Now I know.

Can you tell me how Bia Om works? what happens?

Strangely they often seem to have potted plants outside too... exceptions both ways of course.

In Hanoi look for the words "thu gian" (=unwind/relax) - but I've rarely seen this in the south.

I think your referring to the barbershops. There are two different types. The legitimate and the ones that offer more. Legitimate have all the usual accompanying things for doing hair and shaving. The others have the bare minimum with more going on in the back room than the front. If there are customers out in front getting haircuts and manicures chances are it's a legitimate barbershop. Look for ones with lil cuties sitting around giving you the big eyes and smiles and I think you have found the real McCoy. All it takes is a few little questions, like "do you do massage?" and you'll find out quick if you're on to the FS or at least a BJ Hoc Toc.

I paid $29. It has a buffet breakfast and has free wifi. The staff are young cute girls. I see girls going in and out of there all day. Lots of business men stay there. I had no problem bringing girls in just when I tried to get 3 girls into the room. They allowed two..haha..

Your impression would be correct. I had a front row seat my first night up there, and I think it was the Indian navy in town that night. Maybe Pakistani or Sri Lankan, but somewhere in South Asia. Anyway, it was one after another going in there, 2 pairs at a time, and at least one couple were full on, which the girl I was with giggled and said it's boom boom. And that's definitely what it looked like from where I was sitting. Either that or they put a mechanical bull in there for her to ride. There was another couple in the room at the time, by the way. And that's a pretty small room. A bit on the seedy side for my tastes, but it's there for whoever wants it.

I might've misread Suds' earlier post and thought he said something about Dong Du and Mac Thi Buoi intersecting. I just worried he meant Dong Khoi, which intersects MTB. Well, now we know exactly where the place is.

breedluv - i try to avoid being specific for a couple of reasons.

one is that the authorities might take a closer interest in a place if specific names and services are set out in detail.

the other is purely selfish in that i keep some good things for myself. for instance i mention hotels in an area but i have the establishments that i use quite happily and i don't want to see them overloaded.

currently i am seeing reports in this place and elsewhere about some hotels in the $40-$50 bracket that say they are gf but i wonder whether those writers definition of gf is the same as mine.

i have not used the upstairs recreation area in bar29 - only the couches. my impression is that anything could happen in that little lovenest.

your comments about [CodeWord901]'s in bkk are spot on. i believe the place has been renovated and that there are now some more private rooms. have you tried the ''no-hands'' restaurants there? there were some reports a year or so ago about something similar in saigon.

just got back. have alot of experience bkk/all over asia &and some europe/us. i was gagging to try vietnam.
