Thanks for the great report! It was very informational. I'm planning my first trip to HCMC this winter. Your report's got me very excited. I've only been to Thailand so far. I'll probably do 2 weeks Thailand, 1 week Vietnam.

Really enjoyed my first trip to HCMC. Will definitely return. I'll just share info as it panned out for me. Some instances I played newbie to see what would happen. Other times I for real didn't know how a place worked.

Dai Nam Hotel: showed up here about 1 am I think. Kinda a maze to get to the massage spot but the desk guy will direct you. Pick a service from the list. The one I chose was 290 k. I can't remember if this was the cheapest or not. This was non VIP and those were double the price and more. Locker room, keep cash and phone in the little shower bag they give you. So anyway, locker room, shower, lounging area where they give you water and a plate of fruit. A guy offers foot massage which I decline. They take me to massage room and a girl showed up. I wasn't offered a chance to pick. Massage and on the flip she goes right to HJ. Dang that feels pretty nice. She asks how much you tip? I say 300 k. She says that's too low. But she doesn't stop HJ. I told her I could possible give more depending on how well she took care of me. Was taking me longer to finish so she goes back and forth from HJ and BBBJ. Gave her 600 k after she allowed CIM...

Indeed you are correct Tom, $5 was a good escape. The thing is I've been with these types of guys in Vietnam before without issues. Maybe it was a slow day for them and they took the opportunity to make a bit of coffee money.

I really don't know what they would have done if I pushed my way past them, it was my last evening in Saigon and didn't want to risk it developing further. Even though I was actually outside the hotel by then and heaps of people around watching.

This is a very good post to remind people of the mindset out there of locals. This one is your own fault. No one will help you for free. I don't care how much they smile and how much they want to show you a place. They all expect payment. You never mentioned any countries that you say people took you to these places for free. My guess would be you went to a country and they could not communicate well enough with you to get you to pay. If you were able to communicate with them so well. Before they take you anywhere you should have ask them if they are showing you for free? Next, ask how much they expect you to pay for showing you? That is the time to negotiate. 100,000 dong was very reasonable to get off of there. Especially since in Vietnam I am not sure how far they will take it? Will they stab you? Who knows. My American Chinese friend went to China and a similar this happened but he had to pay $700 USD. You had to pay $5. You did a good job of getting away for so little.

Just be careful following the guys on Bui Vien offering girls. I've tried this in the past in many different countries and had no issues, but last week I had a bad experience. Was walking back to the Pullman and about 3/4 of the way along Bui Vien was approached and offered some girls in a nearby hotel. The hotel was actually just off Bui Vien, on Do Quang Dau St, lot of people around, not a shady back street or laneway. I went into the hotel sat in the lobby and they brought in 5 girls, pretty average for my standards so rejected them. 5 minutes later another 5 or 6 showed up and I was equally not interested in them. Told the guys thanks a lot maybe next time and got up and went to the front of the hotel to leave. They were saying stay and we'll show you more, but by that time I'd lost interest totally.

I got outside the hotel onto the footpath, and then the 2 guys physically blocked me from walking away. Now the main guy blocking me is short and I'm towering over him but he won't budge. I try to push past and can feel he's quite strong and he's getting loud and abusive saying I have to pay for their time. At first they say I own them US $20, I stay calm on the outside but my heart rate is increasing thinking of the options. I could make a run for it, but there are lots of guys hanging around on motobike, not sure if they are part of the same mafia or just innocent bystanders. I tried to motion to one of them to call the police but that didn't work either..

I was there in April and I got approached twice by those men on different nights to see the line up of girls. First night they took to a place look like a backyard of a sketchy massage place and waited there for few min as girls were showing up. They were all average so I left. No hard push or hassle. On the other night the guy (probably another guy as I don't remember because I was high), another average line up and there were some other potential customers there. I said thanks and I walked out. No hassle. By the way I'm a young guy in my 30's and at least my attitude doesn't show that I'm new to these scenes.

Not worth the hassle. I would have offered them 100 k take it or leave it and walked away. To me it would be a fair price of seeing the girls. Hopefully you didn't expect them to look like the photos they have. There's no need to do business with any of these guys. I actually get along very well with one of these guys and I still wouldn't trust him to show me one of his girls.

Walk around Walking Street and the side alleys. Girls everywhere in massage shops and bars. Otherwise go to one of the many massage places in the hotels. There is no need to ask for contact information on a girl.

I checked google maps for the hotel name, but I think the photos are out of date. It was small Viet mini hotel, maybe 50 m down the street on the right hand side. On other visits I had gone with guys to check their girls out and didn't have this issue, in fact got a gem of a girl one time. Was taken by surprise as didn't see this coming at all. They didn't look like gangsters, in fact the guy that took me there said sorry afterwards.

Have been to Pattaya and Angeles City a lot, I'm looking for some bars like those. I've read that Smiley's is one such. Can anybody help me with other such bar recommendations? This will be my first time to HCMC, in a couple of weeks.

Also looking for the hugging cafes, bia om / cafe om. I did find some names by some internet research but they are not in District 1 where I plan to be.

I misfiled last report under HCMC massage. Pretty Tagged office lady from previous night arrives at my hotel 40 minutes late.
