So not to continue the argument and instead just state what I THINK is a sensible course of action - I THINK that it's always advisable, sensible, considerate etc to use condoms if you're having sex outside of a monogomous sexual relationship - because of the risk of unwanted pregnancy and STDs.

I ALSO THINK that sex with condom is usually not so bad and sometimes better than as nature intended.

Well, whaddya know, upon mention of a new kind of opportunity by Mutantchicken I gave it a shot. All I have to say is one word - interesting.

Yes there are lots of people, foreigners and locals alike, engaging in unprotected sex. With hookers? I'd be surprised if it was most. I'd be surprised if it was more than 10%. Statistics say that millions die per year of it worldwide. I dont' see any reason to doubt these numbers. I can't understand why anyone would presume that foreigners are immune because they come from other countries. Are you suggesting HIV requires a racial match in order to be transmitted? I'm just trying to figure out the rationale here.

Your 2nd point seems to imply that you don't believe people are dying of AIDS in Africa. If I got that straight, I think I don't even need to take it further, can let people judge for themselves where you're coming from with this. At some point you have to move beyond living in a world constructed only of doubts and actually check to see what evidence exists. In this case, you'd find overwhelming evidence from all kinds of legitimate sources that AIDS is an enormous problem in Africa.

Can we at least agree that HIV passes from one person to another, and it does so by one person's infected blood getting inside the body of another person?

Gangles, this is really a very funny and dangerous misuse of statistics. Your conclusions about condom use are totally false. You can't take the overall infection rate and assume it is the same for all persons regardless of risk factors. The fact is, higher risk factors, greater chance of disease. A disease-free monogamous heterosexual couple has almost no risk of infection. But a man visiting multiple prostitutes and having sex without protection has an entirely different risk factor. To lump them both together with a national rate. . . just doesn't work.

To use an analogy, let's say you are talking about auto accidents. I'll just use a made-up number as an example. Let's say that 1 out of 80,000 auto trips results in an accident. You feel it's a negligible number, you should be safe. You also like to drive while drinking and texting. But you assume as the road accident rate is so negligible at 1 out of 80,000, that drinking and texting should be fine. Actually, the accident rate for those who drink and text is much higher than 1 out of 80,000 and much lower than for those who do not.

To use the overall infection rate as the same as the risk factor rate for non-monogamous sex without condoms, well, it should be obvious it's not the same. But if you really don't want to use condoms with multiple hoes, then maybe you have convinced yourself it should be ok. It's not. Also, getting a blood test after the fact does not protect you from any disease, but it does help in getting early treatment or not infecting others.
