It seems from reading a lot of requests from foreign members, that the opinion of Australia is that it is a racist and unsafe country. And obviously some of it is merited, due to Australia's immigration policies now and in the past.

However, I do want to make members who are considering touring Aus aware that it is possibly the most ethnically diverse and racially tolerant countries in the world. Even our conservative parties here would be considered centre right in US politics.

As a immigrants child, I have never been harassed or attacked on the basis of skin colour, and most non-AngloSaxon's would have similar experiences. Of course there are areas one needs to be careful - but I felt more scared in Amsterdam and New York City.

And interestingly, the only time I suspected I was being refused admission because of my race was at an asian brothel in Melbourne, which only allows asians in. That place (59 York St) has a poor reputation for doing this to white, and other non-SE Asian patrons.

I need recommendation for best place for an extended stay in Australia (or New Zealand) during Oct thru Apr. I'm retired so I'm interested in a quiet and safe apartment within proximity to good pooning and fun places to hang out.
