That depends on what "getting by" means to you. It's not Europe, they don't speak much English anywhere in South America including Brazil. So, if you're OK with prives (small *****houses) and termas (small *****houses where you wear a robe), it's very easy, just gather addresses on the Rio forum and plan your stay around these establishments.
