As others have commented guys have different views about spreading their seed willy nilly. Herpes simplex type 2 can be spread when there is no active outbreak. As Rock correctly explains, a person with herpes is "shedding" the virus from the surface of the skin even when no blisters are showing. And, as he again explains correctly, the shedding can be from the skin around the opening of the vagina where the base of the penis, which is not usually covered by a condom, makes contact.

Yep, it definitely can. So can the other form. Incidentally, both forms can cause outbreaks on either the mouth or the genitals. It's not the case as some believe that one form attacks only the genitals and the other attacks only the mouth. If you've had a cold sore, you have one or both forms. Even if you haven't, you probably do. Your immune system is just strong enough to repress it.

The good news is that it's not harmful for men. It's been around for as long as we humans have and only became a major issue with the moral panic that broke out (pun intended) in the 80's. Before that it wasn't even considered something to seek treatment for. More good news, it most often spreads during an outbreak, so you at least have a chance at noticing it beforehand. The problem with those medications is that they wipe out all flora, not just the bacteria causing the odor. They can also lead to resistance of other, much more dangerous infection agents. That's why they are not recommended in many countries with advanced health care systems.

BV isn't completely understood, even by the medical community. It's believed that it's a result of an imbalance, not an outside infection. That is, it's like a yeast infection. Yeast is ALWAYS present in a woman's vagina. The problem comes when the amount of yeast grows too high and outnumbers everything else. And the two are often confused for each other, with similar symptoms. Up to half of the women treating for yeast infections actually have BV.

The good thing is that BV causes no problems other than the odor mentioned, for men or women. It usually goes away after a woman has her period, which helps restore balance. I too ran into a plethora of bad smelling pussies the last time I was in AC. When I reported that here, people said I must have been having bad luck.

The irony is that most / many Western mongerers also have little grasp of modern scientific knowledge of sexually transmitted infections.

A bad smell is almost never an indication of an infection (or more specifically, an STI which should concern a man). That smell is a result of a PH imbalance, usually caused by bacterial vaginosis which is common among sexually active women.

Of course it's quite possible that the same girl who has this sort of infection could also have an STI, but the one is no indication of the other. The most dangerous thing about STIs is that in fact you cannot usually tell by a simply glance if a person is infected or not (except in case of an outbreak of the two STIs that are least harmful to men).

Douching and feminine washes and sprays can reduce or even eliminate these smells for a while (which is why savy working girls in Thailand use them. Rarely a bad smell there!) , but in reality they prolong the imbalance and require the girl to keep using the product.
