Not all Germans are grumpy, just as not all Americans are cheerful. It is silly to make extrapolations from a few experiences to an entire nation. Marlow, I am sure you realize that there are a lot of Germans on this board, too, and you are not exactly endearing yourself to them with blanket comments of the kind you have produced below.

Tuough I am not German I think that it's not fair (and moreover it's not true) to describe a whole nation as racist and rude. Charme may be not the distinctive quality of Germans but they are far from the way you have described them.

But as someone who has been here a lot longer than six years, my opinion is that Germans are rude and bolshie.

The nice ones work in international businesses so have learned some Anglo-Saxon savvie and charm.

But your average kraut is pessimistic, melancholic and bad tempered. I marvel at their ability to go from normality to rage in one move.

Upset a German (not difficult) and you get a torrent of abuse.

Let's face it, if you were known worldwide as a friendly nation you would not need to spend the entire 2006 World Cup runnning a PR campaign trying to convince everyone what great people you are.

And in what other country would sex workers get away with putting 'no foreigners' in their adverts?

My first visit here several years back was a negative experience overall, some cute girls but not enough to my liking. And the attitude of the lady behind the bar when I asked for a beer was just as London Traveller described...very cold personality.

Not that sure I want to get into this scuffle but I do have some thoughts on grumpy Germans as I have been living here now for 6 years, visiting regularly 4 years before that. I know grumpy Germans very well. It is kind of a national trait as I see it. And I also experience that these same grumpy Germans, when approached in just the right way, the softest sweetest people I have ever met. What is the right way? Make 'em laugh. This can be difficult but the German sense of humor is actually pretty keen, especially when they look at themselves. I usually tease them a bit about the grumpiness and they laugh then melt. They do see it I think, the grumpiness, and are kind of dying to give it up and laugh.

So I do not discount your observations, it is true that Bernds has a clubby atmosphere that had I not been with Iseeu I myself might have found off putting. But if you crack that grumpiness barrier, it is in this mongers opinion one of the best, if not the best, In Germany.

As for YMMV-is not this whole damn hobby YMMV? Is not life itself YMMV?

I totally disagree with you. I had never faced any problem in Bernds because of not speaking German. I am from india and a regular visitor for so many years. All the staff and girls are very cordial and shows no discrimination for non Germans.

I do suspect that we do not do ourselves any favours at times by the way we behave. big clubs you can get away with it, but tiny Bernds we can stick out like ..well, I leave you to add the anatomical part I am thinking of. It is a clash of national characteristics mixed with how many behave when 'off base'.

I've always gone solo to Bernds and never had a problem. My (very) limited 'Pidgin Deutsch" has never been a problem, some of my all time great sessions have been with a girl who speaks NO English at all. Sure I always call to see if at least one of my favorites is working, OK, I'm pickier than most regarding playmates, but I never feel there is a shortage of girls ready and willing to party (and I ain't a babe magnet !) even if they aren't my "type".

Sounds great. You must be known to them though if you know the girls well enough to have 'favourites'. The problem I had at Bernds clearly wasn't a difficulty about being on my own, as there were plenty of other guys there flying solo, and I also don't have a problem with girls who speak no English, as long as they have the right attitude, in fact it can be a lot of fun trying to communicate in pidgin and sign language!

The difficulty really was the unfriendliness of everyone and the lack of service provided. This started right away when I came in when, instead of being given a big 'hello!', I was given the third degree about where I had parked my car. Then I was shown the locker but not where the showers or the slippers were, and things pretty much carried on like that for the rest of the afternoon. When I said 'hello' to the girls who I saw at first (about four different ones) I received a hostile stare and minimal responses and, I hadn't mentioned this before, pretty much every time I asked for a drink at the bar I was made to feel that I was interrupting a conversation. The coup de grace was when Magda, who behaved in the room as though she was late for something very important, gave me a critical lecture for saying her name during sex! I'd hardly call that 'great service' or the 'party' spirit!

It's great to know that some people, such as yourself, have better experiences than I did at Bernds. Maybe you (or another regular customer) could go with me next time and things will improve? I would be delighted to be proved wrong about this place.

You are absolutely correct that I stood out at Bernds by the way I behaved. I was at all times polite, friendly and smiling, unlike all the staff I saw there and quite a number of the other punters.

She was at Traum Paradies for a long time and considered by many to be a hit. Then to Bernds, back to TP, then back to Bernds. A lovely looking girl, but I would confirm your impression of her. Not really into it. Though with you she was really having a bad day.

If you had spoken to the management, which I think you should have done, then Magda would probably have been invited to seek employment elsewhere.

To give a client a hard time as she did is unforgivable.

I suspect Madga has, for a while now, turned sour. She puts out for certain people, mostly regulars whom she feels obliged to step up for.

I'm not sure that I could have done this, especially as I speak no German and, without exception, the staff at Bernds didn't seem to appreciate an English-speaker turning up at their place. As I indicated in my report, I wasn't exactly welcomed in a friendly manner at Bernds and the distance everyone kept from me was not conducive to making a complaint. Magda was the first girl I saw there and I assumed that they were all like her: unsmiling and critical. I actually suspect that she rushed me through her service in a very irritable way because a regular customer of her had arrived and she wanted to get it on with him (this was the man who I reported had said Hello, to her in the lounge which had galvanised her into prompt action with me). Immediately after seeing me she went up to him in the garden but he didn't want to see her then so she returned to the sofa (therefore there had actually been no need for her rush). This rather cliquey atmosphere and poor service, unsurprisingly, along with the ciggy smoke, contributed to my decision to leave and not try another girl. I am unable to recommend Bernds to someone going there for the first time unaccompanied by a regular customer who could make appropriate introductions. IMHO this place is like a club where one needs to be introduced in order to be made welcome.
