That's a good question. The fact is (more often than not), you will not know that you are HIV positive until HIV has decreased your CD4 count (which is an indicator of your body's strength of immunity) low-enough to cause symptoms of having AIDS via systemic complaints. There are many criterion for AIDS, but here are some examples of potential 'systemic complaints':

Candidiasis of esophagus (whitening in mouth/etc), cryptosporidiosis (persistent diarrhea), CMV of organ (ie. liver - causing jaundice/etc.), persisten HSV infection (ulcer persisting >1 month), Kaposi's sarcoma (reddish/purplish/non-blanching raised skin lesions), PCP (a type of pneumonia), lymphoma or toxoplasmosis of brain (causing mental status change/seizure/etc.), chronic sinusitis. Initially, one may also get a non-specific fever a month or two after contracting HIV.

As you can tell, symptoms of AIDS are very, very non-specific. Also, most people do not get recurrent systemic symptoms until about 10 years after exposure.



You propose the question: "Why Did The doc. think he had AIDS SIDA in the first place?"

I am assuming that he may have been worried about his practices with prostitutes and wanted to check/screen himself; if he contracted HIV recently, he is likely asymptomatic at this point.

What is recommended? If you are involved in high-risk behavior (ie. IV drugs, multiple sexual partners) AND you are interested in treating HIV early (IF you were to contract it), you should GET YOURSELF TESTED. If you were to continue in these activities, you should semi-regularly (ie. once per month, once per year, etc.) get yourself tested. More than just HIV, if you were to see a physician, I would check the following (altogether): hepatitis C antibody, gonorrhea/chlamydia penile swab, RPR (for syphilis), and, of course, HIV ELISA test. I get tested (and thankfully am clean), and I am sure that many other mongers test semi-regularly, as well.

No problem, it's my pleasure to help out; other people taught me, and I find important to spread the truth. I simply hope that my posts can help him and other people on this board. The stats that I posted in my previous message are what is 'officially' known. As for CBJ/CFS/CFS with anal penetration, there is risk (ie. if you have condom-breakage/etc.), but it is not totally known of the risk. Obviously, even without protection, the risk is very low. However, the basic fact is that there is always some risk, and it is this risk that every monger takes.
