Tipping.

It's generally accepted that giving is more joyous than receiving. I know this applies more to sharing and caring than to tipping but I do tip working girls as a matter of course unless they have really pissed me off for one reason or another. Why? Restaurants: If no service charge is included, you can leave the coins (smaller / cheaper places) or 20-40 Baht depending on price and service (proper restaurant).

Regular massage: Leave 50-100 Baht depending on the place / price (50 Baht in smaller places; 100 Baht in actual spas).

Regular massage with extras: The extra is the tip. E. g. , when you pay 500 Baht for a HJ, that's the tip. No more tip needed (and I would consider it rude to be asked for one).

Soapies, Oilies: Depending on venue, price, and service, it's up to you to tip between 100-500 Baht (whereas 500 Baht would be for a top performing superstar at a high-end soapy). Thai guys tend to tip in soapies. Oilies are for foreigners.

Taxi: No tip expected, but it is common that both sides (guest and driver) are not too stingy but somewhat flexible about small Baht amounts. That means that I will not expect a change when I give 80 Baht in notes on a 75 Baht meter; likewise, I drivers often give 20 Baht change when I give 100 Baht note for a 83 Baht meter. I don't mind not carrying too many small coins with me. A taxi driver keeping more than 9 Baht of asking for a tip I would consider rude; it's just not customary here. If I have lots of heavy luggage the driver helps with or he has to wait somewhere because I need to go get money from an ATM first, I give 20 Baht.

Hotel: I give 20-40 Baht for the luggage boy and leave 40 Baht for the cleaning ladies when I leave the room.

You can tip taxi drivers if they were nice (the ones that put the meter on), you can tip regular massage girls if she did a good job (after an hour of foot massage for example), or waitress in your favorite restaurant (the ones that doesn't already add the service charge).

It all depends on your activities in the country. If you come for holiday for just a few days you don't need to tip them, except to leave a small change (no more than 10 baht) in the restaurant, or give 20 baht to the regular massage girl just to help her out.

The thing is different when you're staying a longer time in the same area and mostly go to the same places because you consider that they treat you well.

I always tip the regular Thai massage girls (40 or 50 baht for a one hour foot massage) except if she was lazy or annoying, I tip only the restaurants that I go to frequently (less than 20 baht), I tip the taxi driver if he's been nice and I sometimes tip the waitresses in bar if they were nice (20 baht).

Personally I realized long ago that I enjoy more my time when I give small tips to the people that were genuinely nice with me. Although Thais are in their vast majority very nice people, as a foreigner you can come across a lot of scumbags that will not treat you the same way as they would do with a Thai, that's why I like to give a small reward to the people that are behaving nicely with me.

I've never tipped in oilies. You're going to get the same service either way.

If you happen to get waylaid on lower Sukhumvit by touts with phony brochures showing "beautiful ladies that will take care of of you" this where you usually end up.

From my only visit it's handy to get to and cheapish, 1500 all in if I remember correctly.

Smallish. Older staff, disinterested management, sub standard amenities and not a very good experience in the room at least with my choice on the day.

That was quite a while back, it may have changed but don't go with a driver or tout.

Make your own way there and save on their commission.

Read my post again. I did not criticize at all. I just indicated I chose not to reveal the age at the time (and by now have forgotten what she told me).
