I imagine that if I ask a Taxi driver to go to Merci, he won't understand, if I ask to go to Mack-see (Maxi) he might know it.

It is true that French words transliterated into Thai, tend to come out completely different.
As example there is a Bangkok road called Henri Dunant next to Lumphini park.
So what do the Thais call it? Ang-ree-Doo-nang (with a silent 't" added to the end). I probably cannot pronounce it the French way, so I use the Thai way.
