RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Forget high heels, provocative clothes and makeup -- the prostitutes congress of Rio de Janeiro state is a serious event for mature women who say their profession is nothing to be ashamed of.


This week's meeting brought together 80 prostitutes from such cities as Brazil's tourist mecca of Rio and the oil boom town of Macae to debate such issues as strengthening their associations, fully legalizing prostitution and protecting against sexually transmitted diseases.


The crowd was mostly middle-aged women wearing casual blouses, skirts and sandals.


"Young cute girls don't come here a lot. The women you see here are trying to organize themselves so that they get some help to survive after they have to abandon the job," said Waldo Cesar, 80-year-old president of Davida nongovernmental organization for the rights of prostitutes.


In fighting for their rights, women need all their self-esteem and have to abandon the shame traditionally associated with being a prostitute, the sociologist says. "We help them to respect the option they made," he said.


Davida, which organized the two-day event that ended on Wednesday, hopes that one day "sex professional" would be written in the women's work papers, entitling them to social benefits and pension, just as any other profession.


Charging as little as $3 to $15 per client allows the women working in the street to survive, but rarely leaves much to save for the retirement that normally comes long before they reach 40. Higher-paid "call girls" normally have other professions and do not take part in Davida's activities.


Prostitution is only half-legal in Brazil. It is not prohibited to offer sexual services for money, but exploiting others is, which in fact means that brothels and sex agencies are banned, at least on paper.


That, Davida insists, only leads to corruption. It supports a change in law that could legalize prostitution and go a long way toward changing the perception that it is a crime-linked business. Congress participants said virtually none of the women today have pimps.


In its final document, the congress gave its support to the bill. It also announced the creation of a monthly forum of "sex professionals" in the state and said it would suggest such forums in every state at the next week's wider meeting for southeastern and northeastern Brazil in Salvador.


Hand-outs, emblazoned with "No shame, girl, you have a profession" logo, included a booklet with tips for safe sex and beauty, as well as a balance sheet to control finances.

But the women said their service is more than just selling sex. Doroth de Castro, a 46-year-old black prostitute, said she also treats her clients' psychological problems.

"I consider myself a qualified shrink ... This is a macho culture here in Brazil, so the man who has to be macho at home with his wife or with his friends in the street can relax and just be himself with me. I am not a threat to his macho-ness."

To do the job, she insists, the prostitute has to give her best to the client. "We work with feelings -- so seduction, passion and pleasure always have to be involved. Otherwise you simply lose a client and get irritated yourself," Castro said.

Well, let's go with my Help experiences, just to provide one more version of the story.

You'll be fine in Rio. US$585 is about right for high season (December-March, June-July), it's about $100 cheaper in low season. As for you first morning in Rio, by the time you get your luggage, have a friendly chat with customs, shake some reals out of an ATM machine, etc, it'll be 9AM, add almost an hour to drive to your hotel. When you get there, if your room isn't ready for check-in (it probably will be), then have them hold your bags while you go out for a suco and some sidewalk babe-watching. If you are renting an apartement and it aint' ready yet, hand your luggage and a nice tip to the doorman, or to your rental agent, or whatever. As for self-service laundromats, WHY? Hand any clothes to a full-service laundry, it costs pennies per pice to get your clothes done, maybe $10 for an entire suit-case worth (of course, don' t use in-hotel laundry services, way too expensive, walk them over to a laundry). You are spending good money and precious freetime to be on vacation and you want to save a buck doing your own laundry?!? Ues your head a little... As for "dress code," personally for daytime I wear flip-flop beach sandals, swimshorts, and football (soccer) shirt. Nightime clubbing, etc, is a bit more dressy in Rio (everybody is status concious) - slacks or khakis, shirt and decent shoes wil be fine. Jeans and sneakers are OK, but will brand you as a tourist. But don't worry about it, loosen up! You'll be in Rio....

I am just curious. I just payed usd $585.00 for a round trip ticket to Rio de Janeiro from New York. Is this a good deal? What is the average airfare for a roundtrip ticket to Rio from the northeast (high season to low season) ? I know during Carnival the rates must be sky high. Also I will be arriving at 7am in the morning. My hotel check in time is noon. What do people do from 7am to noon. I don't want to be lugging my luggage around. I could be the unlucky tourist who gets robbed of all his stuff.

There are a lot of self-service laundromats in Copacabana, there's one on Rua Bolivar less than one block from Ave. Atlantica (on your left, walking away from the beach), and another one on the next cross street, to the left. No shorts in Help, jeans and sneakers are fine, though you want to look nice, not too casual, just for the sake of the girls.
