I have been researching a lot including asking my father that was stationed there a long time ago. I'll go from the bottom up:

1. Take enough money to enjoy yourself. You really don't need to bring it in hand since your bank ATM card will work fine and you can find ATMs in English in large city's like Manila. But to make sure some cute honey doesn't take it all, just go to your bank and open up a "travel account" separate from your main accounts and do internal transfers of funds there and use that debit card.
