No way that I want to start a fight here but really? Do we need to know world capitals or geography only if someone is going to travel? I found this very weird, given the fact people like me rely or take things said here quite seriously. Aren't the world capitals like taught in primary schools and continued till high school. Don't people watch or read the news? Don't they breathe or eat?

Keep in mind that we Yanks were their most recent colonizers, and, like us, they can recite "sports stats, details about the lives of celebrities, movie / TV trivia, the intricacies of computer games, etc. " Also, like Americans, their country is separated from most of the rest of the world by large expanses of water. Whereas Americans can afford to travel internationally, most lack the intellectual curiosity to do so. Filipinos at least have a couple of excuses: high public school dropout rates and, for most of them, income levels that preclude international travel.

It appears that, where geographic literacy is concerned, Filipinos simply take after their colonizers and most influential foreign allies. Better for a Yank to acknowledge this, methinks, than for a Brit to point it out.

I am a fan of the airport pickup but not for newbies.

I think for a newbie, it's not recommended. For me now I'm comfortable to do it and if it's not looking good happy to pay for her to go on her way. Never had to do that.

Thank you for the suggestion, I consider myself a newbie and will stay away from the airport pickup game till I'm confident that I can handle the situation. I too like getting into a hotel and relaxing a bit, being oneself before taking my little bro take control.

There are also some instructive YouTube pieces by Filipinas who tell openly and sincerely how they play the game on foreigners. Best are the ones by bargirls who talk very sincerely on how they operate. One podcast I saw was really excellent and should be mandatory for any monger going to the Philippines! Very common is having a Filipino boyfriend while having the one and only relationship with a foreigner. The boyfriend actually ends up being visible, but introduced as a 'brother' or 'cousin'. I even know some married foreigners who have the 'cousin' staying in the same house!!

As I understand it, actually from reports here, there is a big punishment for adultery. Even for the person having sex with the married one. Some have reported shakedown extortion on the person.

My vote is the driver will die from shootout with the police with a few kilos of drugs in his pocket.

Before getting married in the Philippines, it is best to understand the Catholic oriented laws that are there. Yes, adultery laws are severe. Also if a married man has sex with someone else, there are 'concubinism' laws that are very severe. Most Filipinos ignore these laws as they have no money. But if your are a foreigner married to a Filipino, then the financial incentives to hit you are juicy! The laws also apply to a foreigner having sex with a married Filipina, the husband can get the foreigner imprisoned. The law does give a possible letout if the wife is a bar girl or in the 'business'. An English guy got into real trouble a few back, who had sex and kid with a married Filipino whose husband was away in Dubai.

I also had many Filipinas pretending to never tasting Filipino street foods before, once in Davao I even had a Filipina who denies knowing where Roxas street is located (its a famous street that sell second hand clothes) before I realized that Roxas street is actually located exactly on her way between home, work.

But my funniest experience happened with a girl in a park, we were getting know each other and talking about life in Philippines / Europe.

So I mentioned how I miss Jeepneys when I am back to my country, she replied that she never ever rode a Jeepney in her life as she always ride taxis, minutes later I received an sms about something important and had to go back to my apartment so we agreed to delay the meeting for the day after.

We said bye bye and left the park, outside the park there are taxi stop / jeepney stop, I stood there waiting for my Jeepney while she also stood there waiting awkwardly even though there are many taxis, so I told her "these taxis are vacant" , she replied "umm uhh errr yes but I am thinking if I take a taxi from bla bla streets it will be better" and then she walked fast leaving the street with an embarrassed face.

Do these girls seriously think that a foreigner in Philippines will give a fuck about whether they ride taxis or own an air condition? LOL.

That is no problem, play along with it, make her feel proud, nice, happy, good! Remember your objective!

And do not fall for buying a house for you to live in with your dream woman. By Philippine law, foreigners cannot own a house. It will be in HER name. So she could boot you out anytime and your money is gone. Marrying the woman makes no difference. Do not jump into the pool without checking if there is water in the pool! Understand the law in the Philippines that gives foreigners virtually no financial protection.
