Let's face it, all you need to know about teaching high school P. E. If you don't already know you can learn in one 2 hour course.

Which 2-hour course? I'm guessing the State will require a 'bit more' than that. Where DID you come up with this (sounds like something from decades ago; Ferris Bueller is long gone)? From your current knowledge of what California PE teachers 'do', maybe you can share with us how the State's Common Core curriculum has changed how PE (and other subjects) is currently taught? A high school Arts / Crafts teacher (a friend) told me a decade ago that the State required reading / writing across all subjects; Common Core will only have increased that. Standards and requirements change from time to time.

That's it. The job requires zero intelligence or skills or special training.

You are guessing. Districts vary widely in pay scale. The District mentioned has a starting pay (for teachers) of $54,649 and a top pay of $100,679 (17 years of service; see link below) for the 2017-18 school year (these numbers are base pay, not inclusive of benefits, Master's degree in subject, etc). A nearby District has starting pay of $47,398 and a top pay of $86,158 (21 years of service). Districts in California's Silicon Valley (where the standard of living is twice that of the mentioned District) will be nearly doubling those last numbers (enjoy some Google time). Districts in mid-west states might see pay schedules about 35% less than those numbers (enjoy some more Google time).

A quick look at annual weather in the area you mentioned (Fresno) shows months of the teacher teaching outside in cold / wet / foggy winter conditions (teaching soccer on a field blanketed in fog to a bunch of 15 year-olds; nothing to it). And months of being outside teaching in 100+ degree summer conditions (teaching swimming to 45 teenagers in a pool; nothing to it). California has the highest class sizes in the US, so our happy PE teacher is dealing with 40-50 hormonal 16 year olds all day. All for $35 k you mentioned, which is just 40% more than minimum wage. No wonder there is a large educator shortage across the American southwest.

I second Dg's suggestion: go for it. Pay level is often enhanced by:

Years of service increments; advanced degrees (masters degrees, specialist degrees, and some school teachers even get doctorates); summer teaching; national credentialing can lead to pay increases also. PE teachers, in addition to teaching things like health, sex education, and the "jumping jacks" stuff, get bonuses for coaching teams after school.

And then there's the requirement to get continuing education credits for maintaining certification. This can be done with additional college courses or, in some districts, continuing education courses offered by the district.

Sometimes I think my opinion is weighted by the age gap. 30 yeas difference means that they have such a different attitude to sex and for them it is not great deal.

Teacher at the most prestigious private preparatory academy in Palm Beach makes less than $80 k. I highly doubt any high school P. E. Teacher has an advanced degree. I mean, that's the whole reason you teach high school P. E. Is because you don't have the academic background to be teaching something / somewhere else.

PL I've had great luck with temporarily breaking up with girls. Best Strategy is no strategy. Go with the flow. There are plenty of them. If you are going after beauty remember there are probably hundreds you need to compete with.
