I met this girl walking through a market in Hanoi. We made eye contact and before the moment was lost I smiled and discreetly showed her 300 K. She looked baffled so I whipped out my, wait for it, phrase book and showed her the 'hotel' section. She still looked baffled but nontheless when I started to move away she followed. An hour later I took this snap. A good time was had by all. Moral of the story. Sometimes the most unsubtle amd forward of approaches gets you a reward. D1

Yes Doppel, These are always my best experiences. Girls who are not out looking, maybe have never thought to be, and if you are not afraid or being forward, and you try this ten times, you will have 1 or 2 successes. I have met girls in the post office, at the employment center, in markets, walking on the street, etc. If you catch their eye and they smile, go for it! Don't waste time with later meeting, dinner, lunch, etc, go for it now! You may offend some but not too badly, nothing like in western countries. One thing to note, keep up your appearance. You don't have to be young or even handsome, but look clean and neat. Better to be wearing decent pants (slacks, trouser) , nice and clean shoes and a shirt with a collar. Keep your hair trimmed and no beard. You may be shocked at what comes your way. And finally, no need to offer money, this will put some girls off as you are treating them as prostitutes. You can give them some gift later if you want a return visit.

I should have emphasized when I advocated jumping on the back of a xe-om to explore the local scene, I only ever do this is the day time, normally mid-afternoon. After dark the 'night animals' come out and many of them like hunting tourists. Don't give them that opportunity.

Also, my advice was aimed at fellas who have a bit of time on their hands. If you're on a whirlwind tour of the country's highlights then fitting in a bit of mongering might be pushing it, especially as you'll be visiting well-trodden touristic places where the traps are already set and waiting. To get the best out of Vitnam you've got to get off the tourist trail where the locals are (relatively) friendly and you're a novelty. The shy but admiring glances you get from the girls in the local market are enough to put a smile on any man's face. However jaded.

And I really don't have any great antipathy towards Thailand. If you want a beach holiday there's no better place in the world, probably. The attitude of the girls leaves a lot to be desired though and is only eclipsed IMO by the strangely narrow-minded attitude of long term expats who do that silly visa-run thing instead of visiting neighboring countries when their visa expires. I know guys who have lived for 15 years in Pattaya on tourist visas and have done 50 visa runs but have never visited anywhere else. Wow. How myopic and in love with your safety-zone can you be?

And Franco, like you, if I ever visit a place where I think a girl is there under duress I walk too. Plenty of willing ones out there.

Doppel, thanks for the good advice. On one trip to VN I did a similar thing, where I jumped on the back of a moto-tout's bike and was taken to 2 places before he got aggressive and put on a threatening demeanor because I had not earnt him a commission. He demanded some seemingly excessive amount for driving me around (I paid, as we were in some back street, and I know better than to get into a fight with a thug in his local territory, and it was probably only US$10). I caught a taxi back to my hotel, but as I was a bit shaken (and was having trouble with Vinaphone internet for phone maps / GPS) had no idea where the two places had been when considering mongering solo.

This did not put me off, and I've had varying experiences on other trips to VN (though still unfortunately never mind blowing, fantastic experiences).

I think this reiterates what I was trying to say in my last post. I definitely think VN can be a fantastic mongering destination, and that the possibility of getting better looking ladies for less $ is possible IF you have the time (and patience that comes with having the time). If you are going to be in each city for only a few days, and are not a regular to Vietnam it can be less pleasant (though I think still worthwhile. Partly because of the challenge to it as you indicate).

For this reason I don't think it is fair to judge people that choose Thailand over VietNam for mongering, especially if their time on vacation is limited. I personally prefer most things about Vietnam, but if I am going to take a dirty long weekend somewhere (like I did for 5 days over Easter) I would choose Thailand, as I can be in the bedroom within a few hours of landing with a decent to extremely hot lady for $15 to $75 (depending on the hotness of woman, what area you are in and what extras are provided). There is a chance that the woman may be a hardened 'super-pro' because of the large and open sex industry in Thailand (though you may get the same kind of lady in VN because the sex industry is not as accepted, so less providers to choose from, and less part timers). The positive trade-off for the openess of the Thailand sex industry is that the woman is going to be there by choice (at least in tourist places); however twice in VN I 'stopped proceedings' because the girl seemed not to be in the business by choice (once at a MP, once a late night FL organised by a tout).


As this part of the forum seems much more active, and useable information seems much more forthcoming these days, I look forward to my next trip; as I would gladly renounce the sleaziness of parts of Thailand for all the things I do love about Vietnam.

The Korean section is where its at and all of these obstacles can be overcome. I speak enough VN to get by, but most of the barber shops in the area cater to tourist and I've have done fine just speaking english. As for transport, I take the bus which is about a 30-45min ride and only cost 4k. If it gets late though I have to catch a taxi or xe om back. There are probably more then 10 of these places all a short walking distance from each other. Just look for Hot Toc with frosted glass doors and for about $30 its one hell of a deal. I have yet to make it to Thailand so I don't know if things will be cheaper. There are a few magazine quality stunners in these places and so far I have gotten pretty lucky with the girls I have picked. My first time was so-so because I was just learning the ropes and I didn't even get to pick her. She knew I was a newbie. My last one was a straight nympho and could of probably sucked the skin of a mango. Even got her number. I will probably end up going to these places 20 or 30 more times before I leave. I doubt I will find anything better in Saigon.

Finding the inside track is part of the fun and not so hard. You arrive in a new town, don't speak the language, no contacts, but you know there are girls around somewhere, it's Vietnam. A relatively civilized country with women who have a mature attitude, especially the older married ones who know the best way to keep their man is to allow him to fool around. Its the culture. You walk down the street, a moto-guy indicates he knows where the girls are. His plan is to rip you off of course but you don't care because you only need the guy once and his knowledge is cheap at the price. So he takes you to a house with girls. You look around, say no. He takes you to another house. Same. You just say no. So the guy is becoming a bit desperate now because he wants his 50K cut. You get back on the bike and he takes you to 'the' place in town. So now you're beginning to get the lay of the land. The next day you don't need the motto-guy (unless you need a ride). You know that 200/250K is about the going rate for ST. If they want to charge you more you just walk away. There's a good chance they'll come running after you with a reduced rate. There are drawbacks to mongering in Vietnam. Service can be appalling. But it can be good too. You never do know. The girls in Thailand may be more adept at assuming the position but they're more viral IMO and their attitude isn't always great and unless you're under 35 or loaded it's becoming increasingly difficult to find that peach.

Yes, Tucker, I lucked out and met her on the cruise. There were other girls but she was the most desirable.

I'd bring a girl because chances of meeting one is slim. I just lucked out this time.

Interesting, you say she's not P4P. Can you elaborate on how you met? You went on a Halong Bay cruise and picked her up there? Are there many / any single women around / available as companions on those cruises? I was thinking of doing one of those cruises next time I go back, and am debating between bringing a girl along (which may be difficult or require compromises because of her job) and just hoping to find somebody there.

How are the cruises themselves? Comfort? Food? Cabin space? Cost?

I met this gal in Sam Son. A beach resort not far from Thanh Hoa. Like most Vietnam beach resorts there are massage parlours and houses of ill-repute a plenty. 19 years old with a lovely firm body. 250K (around $15). Worth it.

I'm always slightly surprised when I traipse out to these houses of ill-repute that I'm always the only foreigner around despite the fact that the girls are generally hot (especially for the price). Okay the level of service can be variable in Vietnam but mongering isn't supposed to an homogenized experience. You take the rough with the smooth. Over the years I've come to the conclusion that most mongers prefer home comforts to a bit of adventure and better quality girls. Hence the popularity of the Russian Republic of Pattaya where the dogs of the SE Asia howl at the moon and the punters still pony up the cash. Strange.

I prefer VietNam over Thailand for many things, but mongering is not one of them. As has been mentioned many times by ex-pats and VN forum regulars; without intermediate VN language skills, your own transport, and a fair bit of info on the area you will be visiting, there is a good chance that most your P4P experiences will be more expensive or much less fun than Thailand.

I still spent time mongering both times I was in VN, and enjoyed the challenge (which is one of the things a few seniors on this thread have said is good about VN P4P) , but due to the above points, and the fact that if caught you can get into serious trouble, I understand people heading to Thailand if P4P is what they are after.

Depending on your age, you could meet a stray backpacker about. Highly unlikely that you would meet a Vietnam gal taking one of these cruises as it seemed to consist of only westerners due to the price structure. However, that being said, there are a few MP joints curving around the harbor with some quite tasty talent at reasonable prices. All open for negotiation.
