Not sure I'm out of the mongering thing forever, since we'll probably visit her native place in China more or less frequently, where I can presumably have some extramarital fun. It's not like I'm the only married guy posting in this forum.

Really there was no alternative to marriage for me anyhow, for a variety of reasons which I don't have to relist here. 3. Does the wedding party money include a dowry of any type? I know that in Thailand, the dowry costs something like US$5,000-- but by custom it is given back to the bride and groom as a gift by the parents. Is it similar in China?

4. What type of traditional things are done at this wedding party? (Jewish weddings have the smashing of a glass as a symbol of the destruction of the First/ Second Temples. Christian weddings have the "throwing of the bouquet.)

5. Is the wedding party what I think it is (i.e., a way for the groom to make friends with the bride's family/ be accepted by them)?

On your questions:

Costs estimates are NOt going to be of any use as wedding expenses varies according to your and your fiance's wishes for the wedding - you want lavish, you'll pay lavish, you want simple and economical, DITTO.

Location is also very important - in that prices varies so drastically between localities in China. A meal at a 5 star Shanghai hotel is gonna be 10, 20 even 100 times more expensive than what you can get at a road side stall in a little village.

Best if you and your fiance first discuss what you BOTH want and then start pricing what you decide on, in the locale you're getting married at. Bargain with the venues, go back and compromise between you and your fiance - and start planning things TOGETHER - for that's what you need to do from here onwards!!

On the rest of this post, I will outline what I know is the '"custom" in Hong Kong and I would think, by extension, most areas of Southern China.

As far as Dowries is concerned - the gals are SUPPOSSED to have already planned their wedding from the time they reach puberty and salt away money, jewelries, goods, items etc into their Ka Cong (Cantonese equivalence of an American "Hope Chest") which she brings into the marriage.

The Parents - and other family elders, respected friends and members of the community etc - are suppossed to also "gift" the couple with Red Packets when the bride and groom carry out the ceremonial serving of tea - an essential and integral part of the "ceremony" you ask about.
